Seven! kites circling in a group above Princes Risborough
Discussion
Driving north from High Wycombe this morning, already within the outskirts of Princes Risborough, and there was quite a lot of bird activity in the sky above the road ahead, I could easily see that at least a couple of them were kites (we have them virtually in the 'back garden' at home, so am very familiar with the shape), and my wife had a good look (I was driving) and counted at least 7 kites, no jackdaws with them, as there often are.
The most we have ever seen flying together is a family of four, I'd be surprised if a pair could raise 5 chicks, so we are wondering if this is unusual, or perhaps it's quite commonplace in that area?

I've seen loads at one time around where I live - perhaps more than 20? They do seem to flock together when they all see something worth eating.
A friend is a farmer up near West Wycombe, he says when he's out ploughing he can have loads of the kites following the tractor after the worms.
Interesting birds, I'm amazed how successful and commonplace they have become - I guess that'as they don't have a fussy diet and will eat anything, dead or alive.
Apparently Shakespeare described London as a "city of kites and crows". I can imagine they scavenged off the rubbish that was around at the time.
My wife thinks they are a bit sinister and are like vuiltures.

Its amazing when food's scare what appears, my brother once counted 12 Buzzards in the field or on the fence whilst ploughing. They used to be rare here but now seeing them is almost a daily occurence.tenex said:

Can those of you lucky enough to see this take a picture?
st. Saw 11 circling today and had the camera. They would have just been dots in the sky though. I'll get one for you next time I'm down. I didn't even think, they're always there.(North of Inverness)
As you've said, stunning success in getting them back as well as they have. Without fail (unless it's nighttime!) I always see numerous kites floating around Bucks. My parent's other farm is in Beds at the end of the Chilterns, and they haven't moved as far as that yet - but fingers crossed - we're seeing increasing numbers of Buzzards though.
