What a responsibility.

My terriers had their 2nd litter 8 weeks ago tonight.

So this weekend people have been coming to pick their pups up.

I've grilled them to the point of interrogation but I still worry. Two hopeful families have been turned away.

And I still worry.

Oh I hope they are all ok and looked after.

BTW the 'Aggressive Terrier' thread is about the dad.

You can only do so much to vet the potential owners.

We were faced with a potential doggy pregnancy a couple of weeks ago and vowed to interrogate and do home visits before rehoming any of the pups. It's also a good idea to form a contract with the new owners in the same way a rehoming centre would i.e. that if for whatever reason they are unable to keep the dog then it is returned to you.

It sounds like you have been responsible, turning away people isn't the easiest thing to do so well done. You've done your part now, so just try to enjoy the last bit of time with them.

My sister went to Uni' with a girl whose mum "reposessed" a puppy as she was un-happy with the care it was recieving, having met the girls father I wouldn't have argued the point as he was a big lad & I'm 6'2"!

At least you give a sh!t, so good on you. As has been said, without becoming a nutter, there's only so much you can do.

For what reason were they turned away?

First couple were too old and infirm to give an energetic terrier the excercise it needs.

Second lot both worked full time, it would have been home alone from 6 am to at least 6 pm.

Then you did the right thing.

Are you issuing a contract with the dog? If not, you can always do so (ensuring the prospective buyers are aware of course) and that contract requires that you have the right to take the dog back if there are any welfare issues and that in the event it requires rehoming that it is brought to you.

I wish I'd known I could make a contract, never even thought about it.

I'm pretty happy with the people so far, and I'll check up on them now and then as I did with the last lot.

Never again!

Yep, it's quite a good idea. Plus if they are required to return the dog to you if there are any problems then that prevents dogs going to rescue centres etc.. which was a clause in our contract for the Newfie.

Charlie's breeder encouraged potential buyers to come out and see the litters as often as possible before being 'allocated' a pup (he matched the dog to the buyers), which gave us loads of nice time with the litter and the parents, and getting to know him, and him time to sound us out, know that we were genuine, etc.

Any prospective buyer who doesn't like this probably has other issues. Personally, I'm glad he was so picky

All 8 pups have gone now, I have been as sure as I can that they're all suitable, but I will be checking up on them in coming weeks.
