I've got 2 boy guinea pigs, Domino-3 and Monty-2, I treat them like my children, they follow me round the living room and into the kitchen for treats all the time! I'll be absolutely gutted when they go, and they all have completely different personalities.
It doesn't matter that they are only small you still love them and get attached the same you would to any other pet IMO.

What are guinea pigs like as pets anyway ?
Was planning on getting a pet for the mrs on her birthday, however she's ruled out a puppy as we live in a shoebox (hongkong) and looking after one might be too time consuming (we both work). We did think about a rabbit but i have the impression they just sit around staring at stuff and don't really interact.

Go for guinea pigs over rabbits, can be more timid but if handled well can be pretty affectionate, you MUST get two though, they are very social creatures, generally 2 males or 2 females get on fine together (occ 1 may pick on another but much less likely than rabbits) Obviously you could get a male and female but with obvious consequences . Females can mate from 3 months of age so same sex pairings much better.
Can be kept indoors, over here there are good size indoor cages (as always get the biggest that you possibly can)
They are rarely aggressive unless scared but they only have their teeth which although can give a good nip are not as bad as rabbits and their claws are not as bad.
Do read up about them though, they need special diet, dark greens daily etc, they like us cannot produce their own vit c so it must be in their diet (most other animals make their own vit c)
I often advise that if a parent really wants to get either a rabbit or guinea pig then go for the piggy .
Poor Roger was very unlucky, pigs life span usually 4-7yrs
