The whole chain of pointless research first dawned on me watching a nature program where a bunch of students were out chasing whales to tag them with some electronics in a big boat, so they could see where they dive to, and where they go.

Midway through it, I just thought, why? why is that interesting to anyone?

Since then, I've noticed a lot of different research institutes just study something for the hell of it, otherwise they won't get their research grant.
