Dog sickness and possible causes.
Discussion
Hi All,
My 4 years old Jug (JRT/Pug cross) called Enzo started being sick about once a day a couple of weeks ago. He was also a bit lethargic. We took him to his usual vet and a blood test was done in which the pancreatitis test came back with a value of 290 against a norm of 120 and within the range up to 400 where pancreatitis is likely but not definite as iit becomes with a level over 400.
He was given some omeprazole to control acid production and painkillers and we were advised to put him on a low fat diet. This is where it gets questionable for me as he had always been on a good quality low fat kibble - Burn’s etc - under 10% fat supplemented with freshly cooked by us under 5% mince or chicken breast .and fed twice a day. Our previous dog had suffered from pancreatitis and subsequently diabetes so we were anxious to try to avoid that.
He also had only low fat treats and restricted in number. He is walked twice a day and has a group walk twice a week with a dog walker with free running included. He’s not overweight.
Upon hearing our feeding schedule the vet seemed a little taken aback as his initial advice was just to start a low fat diet with Hill’s low fat digestive care kibble.
The advice was to start that diet and to review in a month - now a couple of weeks away.
The blood test also showed a slightly raised red cell count - put down to slight dehydration and a raised calcium level of 3.1 against the upper normal range of 2.6. Strangely if it is pancreatitis the amylase and lipase were normal - I understand that these are enzymes that are produced by the pancreas so should show up any issues with it .
Anyway Enzo is now on 4 small meals a day to help digestion and energy levels are better but a bit changeable and he can be lethargic. He’s been sick twice in the last week- yellow bile dark in colour with little/no mucus
I am at a loss as to what is going on as the diet hasn’t seemed to cure the problem - although I doubted that it would anyway given his previous low fat diet.
My fear is that there is something serious going on - I do tend to be a worst case scenario type. This is heightened by the blood test results and the high calcium which can be a sign of cancer, although a further test to breakdown the calcium would be need to be sure and which we will have done on the next visit.
To say I’m worried for my best mate is an understatement. Any suggestions, advice etc would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
