Hi All

Starting this thread to see if any one has rescued a dog and any tips on how to manage it

Back ground this is not my first rodeo in ownership currently have 2 - 1 cross breed and 1 GWP and we are rescuing another GWP ( UK based) due to his owners misfortunes health wise.

Planning on some time off work and also work from home so will be able to manage in giving him space and time to adjust. Vets booked for a health check as well. And Tracker on order that he will wear on his collar

Any other tips are greatly appreciated

Good on you for rehoming a dog in need. I've adopted a few (think I'm up to number 15 now yikes)

It sounds like you've thought of the main things - giving the new addition time to settle and adjust, but being there for him. Establishing a routine is important.

Find out what he's been eating and get some (if the previous owner doesn't give you any). Even if you want to change his diet, you'll need to do this gradually, so will need some of the old food. Write down any questions you have for the previous owner, so that you don't forget to ask.

Other things that occur to me:

Microchip transfer
Vaccination cards
Vet records - you may need to ask your vet to request them

I have adopted most of mine from rescue centres, who deal with transferring these things, but if it's a private rehoming it's a bit different. I've only rehomed privately once (the most recent addition). I downloaded/adapted/printed a 'transfer of ownership' form for me and the previous owner to complete - I'm a bit cynical, so didn't want any future issues. I also downloaded and kept the advert.

It might be worth thinking about DAP if you think he may be a bit stressed. I've used it with new and existing dogs a number of times (diffusers and collars).

If I'm reading your post right, you have 2 dogs already? If so, introductions are best done on neutral ground. If you can take them all for a decent walk before taking them home all the better. Be aware of potential 'flash points' with existing dogs, such as entry to the house, feeding times, bowls and toys (pick up the latter two until you're sure they're all okay together).

I'm assuming GWP is German Wire-haired Pointer? There may be GWP rescues online who have online resources/leaflets with tips for settling in new dogs - this is certainly the case for other breeds. But to be honest, any decent rescue website may have advice on settling in a new dog that would be useful.

But as this is not your first dog or GWP, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Photos are obligatory, of course! smile

Thanks yes so he’s a handsome boy and will fit in well with us. We have had the neutral ground walk and will be doing this again prior to handover and collection. Vets records and vaccinations all sorted and we have a check up with our vet booked

Not sure what you mean by DAP?

We will be entering from the garden after the drive and no food etc will be down and we will start of separate rooms for feeding and we’re lucky he’s on the same kibble as my two already. And he will come with his blanket and we have a separate bed not unpacked that this will go on

He’s through the GWP rescue who have been amazing so far

And the handsome boy in question

Wow, what a lovely looking pack!

Sounds like you have it pretty sorted, to be honest. The rescue may have some guidance too, if you ask them.

DAP is Dog Appeasing Pheromone. The most well-known make is probably Adaptil.

For example, diffuser:

Collar:

Best of luck.

Also give it a good three months for the new one to settle in. New behaviours and boundary testing can occur for ages after adoption. Just keep consistent and be the alpha. Usually the charity will set up an adoption chat and will ask for updates. Any concerns put in there so there is a record, plus they can help with behaviour management, food advice, vet stuff etc. Or at least the dog charity I foster for does. As the foster home we keep 8n regular touch and check that you’re all getting in well or if any tweaks need to be made.

Looks like you’re very capable of this addition and likely have great fun ahead of you!
