Where have they all gone? We have a healthy population of sparrows where I live, they use the provided nest box every year, the feeder was being filled and emptyed every couple of days, then all of a sudden about three weeks ago they all disappeared and I mean all. I've not seen one, the feeder remains untouched. There's always been a drop off in numbers at certain times of the year but I've never seen it as dramatic as this. My guess is they "flock", if that's the correct term and vacate the area to winter pastures to return in spring or maybe they've seen the antics of Starmer and his Pound Shop government and have left the UK for good?

Exactly the same experience here - packed feeders and I estimated we had about 30 or so living around the house. They've been replaced by blue tits in the last month.

Although I snapped this chap sitting on the roof overlooking the feeder.

Sorry, I think they’re with me. When I go out later I’ll tell them go head home as their dinners ready!

Sparrows n Tits etc all "dissappear" from my patio/garden every year around april ish then come back about now. They know I put out seeds/toast crust etc every 3rd day throughout winter.

With our crew of up to 70+ just after they have their last brood around mid july, they generally stay with us all year round (because they
are incredibly spoiledbiggrin), only going on occasional local forays elsewhere for a few hours, however there has been times where they
have been heavily targeted by Sparrowhawks and completely desert the area for up to a week or a bit longer.

But they always return, all together at the same time usually.

Love Sparrows, real flock birds that stick together, their chirruping is heart warming.

Our lot haven't returned yet, put the feeders out about 3 weeks ago for the season, the perma blue tits are noshing in force and hopefully will nest in the boxes once more, resident robin's happy but the message of large portions of grub haven't yet reached the sparrows.

Back when i were a lad sparrows were everywhere, you seldom saw a magpie, maybe their hugely increased numbers (thanks in no small way to fast food litter strewn about towns) is partly the cause of the diminished sparrow population.

Are you in the south?

The increase in Red Kites properly has something to do with it.

There are loads in the bushes at the side of our house here in London, all bobbing about & chirping all day and flying up to their nests in the eaves opposite. cool

They really get through the seeds in the feeders.

A Red Kite hasn’t got a hope in hell of catching a sparrow unless it’s old/sick, but I guess it could put the Sparrows off if they’re always around.

We have the noisiest set of sparrows in the Universe living in our eaves and I can confirm they’re not remotely bothered by the red kite that’s now started nesting near the end of the garden and wanders around our roof a bit. They totally ignore each other as far as I can see

I reckon about half our lot disappear around this time each year but sadly I also have no clue where they go
