Our Labrador, Albert, has just turned 7. Really great, chilled out boy, never been a poo eater in the past, doesnt chew and happy to be left alone. (Not that we do often, I WFH and if im ever away we have a dog walker who comes in the middle of the day).

We moved house about a month ago, coincides with Albert deciding he wants to eat his own poo.

The old house way rural and quite set back from the road so pretty quiet. He would get walked most days. We’ve now moved to a place with ~3 acres of woodland, as such he doesn’t get walked as much in the usual sense, but is always out and about with me in the woods etc and curled up in the office on the sofa when I’m at work.

The new house is closer to the road so a bit noisier and he does have a woof when dog walkers go past.

So what’s going on? My wife thinks he’s bored, but I don’t agree. I assume it’s a stress / anxiety response associated with the house move.

What do you all think, and how do we help him? He does eat a lot more sticks now he has access to a good supply!

My old Lab started to eat her own poo for no apparent reason, did some research and a lot of reading pointed making the poo taste nasty with a solution being charcoal biscuits, started feeding her these along with making sure she wasn't into the habit of eating the poo and after a couple of weeks she lost interest in the poo.

Of course this is just my experiance

We get this pretty often in rescue. We feed fresh pineapple to them at each meal, something about it going through the digestive system puts the dog right off it.

Why bother addressing the issue?

Seems a rather efficient self-cleaning dog to me.

One of ours loves to eat other animals poo, never her own, cat poo is a particular delicacy for example, stupid mutt!

As soon as I saw the title I knew it would be a Lab. Coprophagia is common in that breed.

Our lab/retriever cross eats her own steaming hot stinking turds. Can't see adding anything to her diet can make t hem any more disgusting than they already are.

In fact our walks are across rural pastures covered in cow/sheep/goat/cat/dog/Lama/badger/etc turds and my dog is in heaven. Pretty much an all you can eat buffet.

Our rescue terrier did this for up to 12 months after we got him but has now completely stopped.

Convinced it was due to anxiety possibly linked to bad treatment from his first owners

We have a lab and he also does this. Really quite common for labs apparently - but still pretty disgusting. Learned to live with it - he’s 7 now and minimise it by occupying him with his ball on walks although he’ll still sometimes drop the ball and head for the nearest pile of turd for a quick snack. Hoping our new lab puppy which arrives in December, won’t follow suit.

Horse Poo for Puck is her go to delicacy.... unfortunately there are loads of stables round here, so it's on lots of the paths and private roads, so have to keep an eye out most of our walks to try to distract her before she gets stuck in. I have sort of given up, but if the hay goes through her it unfortunately comes out only half way and requires hand extraction....
