Hi All,
We recently had a new kitchen and boiler installed and about 2 months later started noticing small black/dark red bugs on the kitchen window cill.

They seem to appear mainly in the evening and don’t fly or jump.

I’ve cleaned the window frames using a bleach solution and sprayed some insecticidal stuff but they are still there. Usually there’s about 5 0r 6 at a time.

I’ve no idea what they are or what I should do to get rid of them. Any help gratefully received.

Thanks.

Could be some kind of little wood borer. I had some bigger ones appearing a month or two after I brought logs into the house.

No need for bleach or insecticide, they're quite harmless.

they look like wood worm beetles to me and far from harmless
they will bore holes lay eggs in any wood they can get into.

if this checks out do not ignore get affected wood treated ASAP

Look up Pollen Beatles, we're in North Yorkshire and have loads coming through the gaps in the windows at the moment. On your pics they look too small to be death watch or furniture beetles and they tend to emerge May/June, though if unsure it's definitely worth checking. I found a few around the window on the outside trying to get in...so I'm thinking ours probably aren't anything sinister.

Very tricky to ID from the small blurry photos, they look to be only a couple of mm long.

It doesn't look quite right for a flour beetle, but that could just be the angle of the photo. It does look like it might belong to the Ptinidae family which includes biscuit (drugstore) beetle,Stegobium paniceum and common furniture beetle,Anobium punctatum. Their emergence ties in when you might spot them, certainly if from within the house.

Have you noticed any beetle frass where food is stored or around window boards, skirting, solid wood furniture or structural timber etc? They could be coming in around the window, or they have emerged indoors and sensing a way out to disperse.

A more closeup photo would be great

Many thanks. The last photo I post posted is the clearest I’ve got but I’ll try to get a few more later. They are only a few m long and very small. I’ve noticed no other signs of them. The house is about 18 years old. Timber frame construction. No signs of damp etc. the only work done recently was a new kitchen and boiler and nothing was seen then until 2-3 months later.

Clearest photo to date.

I tend to agree with Google lens that it looks like Tobacco Beetle!

Tobacco beetle is in the same family (Ptinidae) as biscuit/drugstore beetle and common furniture beetle. They all look remarkably similar. Tobacco beetles are normally found in warmer regions but they can get moved around in goods and packaging.

It would be great if the OP could get more closeup photos, including the head end so the head and thorax are more visible.

Will have a good look at those when I'm home. You don't happen to live near a woodland, or store logs wood?

Sorry about the photo quality. I’m reliant on my iPhone. I’ve tried the iPad and that’s worse

There are no woodlands near and we don’t store wood. The nearest trees are 10 year old conifers which are about 25-30m away. There a 20 year old shed about 7m away and. a 3 year old wooden bin and oil tank store about 1-2 m away.

Thanks again.

Update-
On arriving home I noticed one of the bugs near the cupboard in the adjacent utility room where we keep just the dog’s dry kibble food and dog biscuits.

I had a look in the cupboard and found some dead bugs, what appear to be “shells” and powder evidence of them feeding , I assume.
Few photos below. I have obviously cleaned and disinfected this cupboard and thrown anything potentially affected and I’ll do the same with all the kitchen cupboards tomorrow.
Thanks.
