I have a hermann tortoise I need to re-home, must be nearly 50.

Was the family pet, now my father's passed away it's mine.

But don't have the time but more importantly I want it looking after "properly" and I just don't think it's going to work here.

Found a refuge place in the south of France that would take her but paperwork is a nightmare to import/export. Thoughts of just placing in car and going for it....

Half jokingly thinking of a cheeky sneak into london zoo....new enclosure there looks pretty warm...

Places in UK seem always "full" found one last year but wanted to meet me in a service station for handover....

Any suggestions?

Not looking for personal offers here really unless you have some evidence of experience, suitability etc..

Not sure if this is a tortoise joke.......

But going to take it at face value seeing as it's due to father passing away.

Did think about it quite a bit due to history but it's the right thing to do

I’ve got a male spur-thighed that needs rehoming also so would like to hear if anyone has some (sensible) options.

Been trying to buy a garden tortoise for years, they are wild around Athens, but not a smuggler lol, seriously, interested, had them for years, the last one turned it in, just before my Nan, no idea of its age, but was with me over 50years.

The only evidence I can give is a picture of the enclosed garden, and like the last one, the door is always open to come in the house, which it did most evenings, liked going behind the TV for a nap. Had to rasise the fish pond though, it was useless at swimming.

We are in Kent . My wife has 6 in enclosed garden. She started years with 2 but has removed the other 4.
2 years ago she took in a tortoise that 130 years old had been in the same family. Was originally the mother’s tortuous then the daughter took it over and she had to then give it up as she was moving in to a home at the age of 90.

If we can help get in touch.

A work colleague has a tortoise we have worked out was born in 1908.

Why don't people thing about these things before taking such an animal on.

Parrots as well.

Can't really help much here, but once you've scooped it out the shell makes a great strawberry planter, or if you hang it up you can try some of those trailing tomatoes

Thanks for the helpful advice from most.... the rest of you ...I have no words, get a grip.

I have now registered to the FB group and had her listed.

But it's hectic over there looks to be a lot of unwanted tortoise, so if your looking for one that's the place to be.

Fingers crossed something comes out of it.

Any other routes or ideas let me know.

My son wanted one when he was about 6. I asked him who would look after it after he died. That was the end of that conversation! hehe

Having said that, I'm not sure what you expect of owners. If people didn't take on a young tortoise because it could outlive them, they'd all be homeless.

Now looking into how much care they need it's clear they shouldn't be pets, certainly not in the UK.

If you are going to do it as stated above really need to have contingency plans for a loong time

Think I am going to end up taking mine "back" to the south of France. Not a bad excuse for a road trip.

Kelvedon is just up the A12 from where I live, and is home to a celebrated tortoise.

Here is the vicar with Felix.
