We haven't been since Brexit and pet passports were a thing. What's the crack now and are short trips prohibitively expensive?

You’ll need to get an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for your dog. We paid our vet around £250 for the first one and about £140 for the subsequent ones (you need a new one for each trip).

I believe they can be done with an online company for a lot less but you’ll be responsible for getting all of the information correct and will have to pick it up from somewhere that may not be convenient.

Things may have changed, but initially, only about 20% of vets were qualified to issue AHCs and ours needed two appointment slots (one to see the dog and one to complete the huge wad of paperwork), and we had to cancel a planned crossing because we couldn't get a vet appointment for about three or four weeks.

Our dog's got a French passport now, so we no longer have to jump through those hoops. The other problem was that the AHC only lasts three months, so we'd have needed three or four each year.

Assume that's per dog, so an additional £500 1st trip then £240 for subsequent visits. Presumably worming tablet and vet visit for return so another 200 euro per trip?

So 2 x dogs could cost an additional £700 for a few days away (not Inc the euro tunnel surcharge)

The worming thing on the return can be a PITA. It must be given no more than 5 days before you cross, and no fewer than 3. We pay about €40, but our dog's registered with a vet because we have an address in France, so for you it may be more expensive.

Don't forget that the ferry and the tunnel will both charge you extra to take a dog across, so you've to add that to your £700
