Always amazed by the amount of knowledge on PH so thought I would post this to see if anyone knows what it was.

Just got back from Florida - whilst walking in Key Biscane (just South of Miami) we came across this chap (or chapette) on one of the trails....





I would say it was about 1.5m long. Wasn't keen to get too close as it lifted its head up about 30cm as we approached.

Anyone know what type of snake it is? I am assuming not venomous, just interested in knowing.

That was the end of that trail for Mrs Stag.

Eastern rat snake I think. Non-venomous.
Harmless (except to rats presumably).
