Just had a visit from a brute of a Hornet.
My daughter was convinced that it was the Asian variety but it looked like the European to me.
Went to get my mobile/camera but daughter had captured and let it out before I got back. frown

Let it go?

I would have launched a shock and awe attack using everything at my disposal

Don't worry. If there's one there'll be hundreds more around.

We had some monsters here, but all European.

Is ‘A Hornet in the Orangrey’ peak PH?

Unless it's got orange trees growing inside, it's a conservatory...!

Hard to scale in a picture but the Bi-Fold door is 900mm across the glass.

Big buggers but surprisingly placid.

There must be a nest near us as we see a few a day in the summer evenings.

Not really. An orangery has less glass than a conservatory they are just a different design.

Anyway back to the hornets. Just let it outside and leave it alone

In theory if it really was a Asian hornet it probably should have been swatted as they are a real (and increasing) threat in the UK to honey bees.

That's my understanding.but it was let out before it crossed my mind.

No in theory, kill them. They are decimating hives here in France, one of my neighbours actually filmed several waiting outside one of his hives for bees to emerge.

No, you shouldn't necessarily kill an Asian Hornet if discovered

https://www.nonnativespecies.org/non-native-specie...

If you can trap it and report to the BBKA there's a chance it can be traced back to a nest (some amazing stuff happening on Jersey to track using drones!).

It's far easier and safer to show a dead hornet to someone than a live one IMHO
