Heard a 'commotion' and turned to see a bumble bee and a hornet in a fight on the ground. Bumble bee managed to fly away then the hornet flew onto the hedge.

I've read Asian hornets are taking over the world and will kill off the bee population, but don't think this is one?

Take off, and nuke the site from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.

That's a European Hornet, I wouldn't worry (don't get stung though, it'll bloody hurt!).

Ok, good, that's what I thought. Didn't like it bullying a bee though!

You've stolen a Japanese japonica - the Asian hornets are angry with you.

Yeah I'm a fan of the Bumbles. And even though I won't kill them, hornets can FRO! grumpy

This year I have two hornets nests and two wasps nests in my roof. The hornets are more placid than the wasps.

Asian hornets have yellow legs, they’re easy to tell apart as long as you’re close enough to see their legs.

We’ve lots of hornets this year but they’re doing a good job of eating the wasps and they’re not interested in me while I’m in the garden so they can crack on as far as I’m concerned.

It’s a shame when you see them killing butterflies though.

Yep, agree hornet.

I found this one treading water in a watering can, must've been 1.5 - 2" long.
Karma made me save it knowing they kill different bds around the garden so i did the brave thing: I tipped over the can and scarpered (for he was brave sir robin):

I'd say that's an ivy.

I too saw the bit on the news about Asian hornets invading and killing all the cute fluffy bees so we will all starve - but that's only if we don't boil in a heatwave, drown when the sea level rises or get killed by a falling school first.

I trod on a dopey hornet that was stumbling around on the hall floor. It stung me. Only hurt for two days.

The only time I've ever been stung by anything was when I stepped on a hornet while barefoot.
Got me right between my toes.
I may as well have stepped on a land mine. I called my girlfriend and told her I was dying

fking things.
