Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about my 2 year old Border Terrier. For the last 4 days he's been sick at about 04:00ish. It's only once & it's that yellow liquidy foamy stuff, nothing solid.

He's perfectly fine otherwise, happy, eating normally, toilet as usual, playing, walks, sleeping all normal.

No change to food or routines.

The only clue I have is he sometimes chews his toys & occasionally swallows a bit. When this happens, he's generally sick early morning & the bit of toy comes out. This happens about once every 2 or 3 months I'd guess. The first time it happened (4 days ago now) I presumed it was a bit of toy but nothing came out & the same the 3 times since.
I'm a little concerned something might be stuck but, if that was the case, why only sick once at the same time each morning??

I haven't phoned the Vet yet, he really hates going!...but obvioulsy I can't let this situation go any longer so before I phone the Vet I was just wondering if anyone else may have experienced something similar?

Thanks,
Ben

We had something similar with our old jr/pug cross a few years ago. He kept on being sick in the early morning-mainly yellow/foamy stuff. Eventually diagnosed as pancreatitis and a low fat diet sorted it.

Don’t let it go on as damage can happen to the pancreas.

I’d be at the vet asap.

First thing I would do is take the toys away.

Take the toys away and if it continues a trip to the vets I’d say

Thanks for the replies.

I phoned the Vet yesterday. They didn't seem too concerned, said it could be any number of things so we pencilled in an appointment for 17:00 today & to bring him down if he was sick again last night, which he wasn't so I think he heard me on the phone! He did wake up once & started licking his lips but I distracted him with a small treat, let him out & then he settled down again.

I'm going to call the Vet again & see what they say.

I have removed the suspect toys. I also tried feeding him differently so he had half his food at usual time 17:30 & the other half at 21:30. I have read that an empty stomach & excess acid can cause this problem (confirmed by Vet on the phone) so thought I'd try it, early days though. Also gave him some pro biotic.

Thanks,
Ben (& Billy!)

Try giving him a little bit of food / a biscuit something before going to bed......

Our doodle went through loads of expensive vet appointments, for similar symptoms, to be told to just give him a biscuit before bed!!

Thanks, I will do. The Vet actually said to try this too with a rich tea biscuit, Billy certainly won't object! I've read a bit about it on the Net this morning too, seems common(ish) that Dogs can get this trouble from an empty stomach over night. I'll see how he goes.

Thanks

It's hunger sick - ours have done it at some point when they were younger. Feeding them a little snack before bed pretty much stopped it.

I agree with the posts suggesting hunger sick.

I had a German Shepherd that was sick like this. Giving him a handful of kibble at bedtime seemed to sort it.

If that doesn't work I'd be talking to the vet.

Update, 2 nights now without being sick. I have been splitting up his food so he has some before bed & that seems to have helped so I'm thinking the hunger sickness too. Both nights he did still wake up at 5ish & do the licking lips, swallowing thing so I disctracted him with a small treat & he went back to sleep.

It's making me wonder if I'm not feeding him enough but he's always been a bit heavy, 10.9KG, Google says an adult male Border Terrier is around 8KG!! He is solid though & plenty of muscle, the Vet was happy with his condition at his checkup a few weeks back, just said not to let him gain any more weight so it's a bit of a balancing act at the moment but, first things first, I want to stop the sickness, especially when he must be feeling uncomfortable.

Thanks for the replies & suggestions, looks like we are making progress.

Cheers,
Ben

Definately. Our Westie has a few healthy treats before bedtime and much less puking now. In fact he sits and stares at me until he gets them laugh
