Just swatted this flying around upstairs.

Never seen the like before. Gave me the willies but then a lot of bugs do.

Looks like it's this and native to the UK but I've never seen the like before and I've been here 60 years.

Apparently can't sting a human, but it can scare the crap out of this one hehe

I spend a lot of time working outdoor and in woodlands, I see all sorts of different wasps. Most people generally think of the typical black and yellow wasps, but the variety is massive and they come in huge range of shapes and sizes with all different niches.

We have those, the one in the picture , outside our kitchen window. They come in when I feed the cat . Smell the food I guess.

Appreciate I'm probably at odds with most here but OP why is your first reaction to swat it? I put practically all the bugs I find in my house outside by putting a glass over them then sliding a piece of paper under, or opening a window.

Normally I would try that but this bugger was alien to me and kept flying in my face.

Fair enough. I'm not some sort of BLM nutter (bug lives matter), just curious.

Looks like a type of gall wasp, stung the living daylights out of me last autumn when I put a jumper on.. it had been camped out inside

I'm with you on this.

During lockdown, I got into Macro Photography and shot a lot of little critters in the garden including wasps and hornets. Up close, they're fascinating creatures, incredibly social and clever. Quite undeserving of the reaction from many.
