Well, these things really do hit you harder than you think. I try to be pragmatic about this stuff, but bloody hell, I'm sad to see him go.
Basil was 10 years and 8 months old, had him since he was 3 months old, had to be put to sleep on Friday. Always like a pup, but deteriorated quickly over a few weeks, it was heartbreaking. Turned out be multiple tumours. He was friendliest, most laid back hound imaginable. A tourist attraction wherever he went and an integral part of our family.
He had a lovely walker who took him out with his mates one day a week. She wrote a lovely tribute on Instagram that sums him up beautifully https://www.instagram.com/p/CwIpahONDTi/?utm_sourc...

Yes, they really do. Sorry for your loss, he cut a fine figure. The Mrs & I have a difficult decision to make in the morning, but I fear that we're just prolong the inevitable. We're in bits, time is dragging terribly.
There ought to be a PH pet memorial page.

When we decided to let Basil go we knew it was the right time. He was tired, he was in discomfort and he wasn’t eating. We had some time with him at the vets then he died very peacefully with us there. That’s the best we could hope for.

It's the toughest thing and I've been there several times. The mistake I've always made is to wait years to get another dog. I regret those barren times immensly. Don't hold back, when you're ready, rescue a dog. It needs you just as much as you need it.
It’s obviously a bit early yet, but I think we will have a few years off. I’m not one for leaving dogs to go on holiday, so we’ve not been away on a plane for a long while. We’ll use the break to do some of those things we couldn’t do and then see.blueST said:

Aww, was sad to read this but then smiled seeing the Instagram post, what a character..! You were so lucky to have such a fab doggo, love the expression in the photo. :-DBasil was 10 years and 8 months old, had him since he was 3 months old, had to be put to sleep on Friday. Thanks all for your kind comments, they do really help. Coming to terms with things now. This might sound a bit weird, but we had him created by a really good compassionate firm, and having him home has made a big difference. Helps us draw things to a nice conclusions. Went out for day yesterday and just reminisced about the fun we had with him over the years.
