So I’ve been a dog owner since my childhood years then on my own for the 15 years..

But I’ve never had a bh always been male dogs and now my pup has come in to season. Is there anything that I should do? She’s happy and we have places to walk away from other dogs.

We have always had bhes, always rescue dogs but the last two have been unsprayed puppies. At the vets recommendation we let them have a season before they were spayed. Both dogs, gsd and a poodle cross kept themselves clean. The one thing I would say is do not underestimate the male dogs in your area, they will be on her in the blink of an eye. Do not let her off the lead when she is at her most fertile, generally 12 days after the season has started.

Yeah we knew it was coming 5-6 months for the breed GWP and it was today we had a male dog out of nowhere appear and our other dog got protective. He had the snip early and is showing no interest to her. Just wasn’t sure if there was anything that I should be doing that I’m not that I’m not currently doing

Daphne is my first unspayed female in 30 years of dog ownership (had females before but all have been spayed before they were adopted). She started her first season back in the spring and is booked in for spaying in a couple of weeks.

As well as being on the look out for males, don't underestimate how determined she may be to find a mate! Daphne was an absolute floozy with our (neutered) male dog. Make sure your garden is secure and she can't escape.

You may find that she'll be a bit 'under the weather'. Daphne went off her food - not totally, but definitely eating less than she had been.

Mate had a dog, Stanley, and he knew every bh in the village, he would go sit outside their houses of an evening and howl when they were in season.

Then my mate moved some three miles away, but, Stanley still knew when to come back to his old hunting ground, so either he had a darn fine sense of smell or a real good calendar in his head.

Memories of one of our Bull terriers back in the 80’s - she was in season so mum bought her pants, cut a hole out for her tail and stuck a sanitary towel in them.

Long time since I had a "whole" female dog. One thing I remember were the sprays to hide the scent / washing the gate area with Ammonia solution and carrying a bottle of diluted Ammonia to cover her pees with after.

My ex’s Viszla came into season on Xmas day, on the way to dinner, on the back seats of her fathers (ex, not the dog) 1 week old cream leather 7 series BMW. It did not end well, although we did buy what are humorously called ‘bh knickers’ afterwards.
