Located in North East America. Size wise I’d guess large for a bird. There’s a couple of them that have been terrorizing the local small birds. I watched one sit next to a nest for 30 minutes being dive bombed by smaller birds trying to save their chicks.

I was about 5M away from the bird when I took the photo. It jumped off the fence and started walking around a shed looking for a groundhog that was hiding under there.

That looks exactly like a European buzzard….tho didn’t know you got them in N America so maybe something related?

Blackbirds and crows etc really don’t like them, though they’re actually much more of a menace to worms generally!

Thank you for the responses. I think it is the red tailed hawk as I was just looking at them as an option.

It looks like they like to eat mammals and they have a distinctive sound which apparently Hollywood uses for all hawks and eagles. They are also one of the largest birds in North America.

This one was quite comfortable walking around near me while looking for dinner.
