So in getting a dog last month we've also committed to not going on holiday abroad this summer and leaving her at home which means we're looking at holidays in August for our family of 4 plus the dog.

We live in the Lakes and my wife is from Argyll. Our UK based holidays have tended to be north of the border so we can incorporate visiting family. We had some cracking holidays up there during covid times, one trip we took in a couple of the hebridean islands and loved it but potentially got very lucky with the weather. Due to being up North we've ruled out driving onto the continent due to the driving time just to cross the channel.

The kids will be 4 and 7 and are quite happy spending their time mucking about on a beach all day every day with the odd play park thrown in. Another reason for looking at Scotland is the Scottish schools will have returned when we want to travel so in theory is a bit queiter.

So where have you been with kids and a dog in tow and would recommend?

Northumberland is great if you've got a dog.

Virtually all the pubs are dog friendly and the beaches are enormous and largely deserted.

Self contained Airbnb's are reasonably priced, or atleast they were pre-covid, probably extortionate now.

Can't speak for holidays with kids, but with dogs I can recommend west Wales.

We liked it so much we moved here!

Mid Wales is also great.

You can walk for miles and miles on golden sand and see virtually no one. Or be more adventurous and let the dogs run through the dunes.

We also live in Cumbria and used to take the kids and dogs to Robin Hoods Bay every year - a traditional family holiday of which I have really fond memories.

More recent years we would go to Kyles of Bute/Tighnabruaich - loved that also.

We've been to Northumberland with our Ridgeback 4 or 5 times - we keep going back, because it is so good.

Superb beaches and plenty of places to walk a dog - the beach at Bamburgh is brilliant and your dog would thank you for going there !

No shortage of nice, dog-friendly places to eat out and wherever we've been, it's always been pretty easy to find reasonably-priced parking.
