Another cat has started coming up to our cat flap and wailing/crying, but i'm not 100% why. The sound reminds me of when we lived in our old house and another cat used to make that noise until we opened the doors and it came in for attention (this was before we had a cat of our own).

Unfortunately our cat has been asleep upstairs when this cat has swung by our way, so I haven't been able to see his reaction (although he is a very scardy cat, so I expect him to run and hide behind the sofa!)

So any ideas why another cat is doing this?

An obvious answer is that the visiting cat has been abandoned or left home for some reason and is hungry and/or looking for a new home. How well does he/she look? Well-fed or skinny?

Some cats gets confused as they get older - they display the same behaviour as they do at home but may be at a completely different house. Or they're being clever and trying it on (Catflap + Noise = PotentialMeal)

Hadn't considered either of those scenarios, I'll try and take a better look today/tonight. Although it normally legs it when it sees movement inside.

Just a thought, wouldn't the scent of my cat put him off? Clearly not, i'm just trying to understand cats (which seems akin to witch craft to me!)

Not necessarily, the scent of another cat can be a challenge to some cats as they know they have a rival or a potential mate on their patch.

One of my cats would frequently go through next door's cat flap, ignore their cat, Jack Russel and food, go upstairs to their bedroom or bathroom and ... sleep!

He would also sleep on their stairs, on which he was fairly camouflaged.

It waz only after they bought a microchip cat flap was he finally prevented - although he did sneak in a couple of times when they left their door open.
