14 years in, my best mate collapsed on a walk today.

Taken to vet, no way forward. Cancer on spleen and liver

Finding it rather difficult to cope at the moment..

Sorry mate - there's no shortcut to making it easier. 14 years is good but there's never a good time.

Without thinking about it, go down to the rescue centre and help another.

Lost our previous dog to cancer of the spleen, mercifully quick for her, heartbreaking for us. Only one day from thinking something was wrong to loosing her. Breaks your heart

Awful, had our beloved cat put down nearly 2yrs ago, that final car journey to the vets well....

Sorry to hear this, we lost our 13 year old dog on Xmas day last year. He collapsed on an afternoon walk, had a scan later in the evening and was found to have a massive cancer across his liver and spleen. Said goodbye to him 6 hours after he collapsed.

My brother in law decided that we "needed" a new dog and turned up with a rescue Cocker on Jan the 6th, he has really helped us get over the loss of our Murphy. This obviously does not work for everyone.

Sorry to hear this Brett. It does get easier but it takes time. Losing your best mate is hard, you're allowed to grieve. Remember the good times and how special you were to each other.

Sorry to hear this but glad to hear that you had 14 great years, think of the good times and be glad it was quick for him.

We lost our 8yr old Labradoodle a couple of weeks ago to Lymphoma..... We did get another month with him before it got too much but we also got the deed done by the Vet at home and at a time that gave us a few days for all the kids to come and say goodbye.... It also gave our other 4 dogs a chance to see that he'd gone.

That was the hardest part.... looking at the poor bugger knowing what was coming. Never felt so guilty in my life!! Anyway, on his penultimate day my son came round and cooked a kilo of steak for him and we all sat at the table with him at the head and had a last dinner together.

I'm not sure he could believe the size of the steak dumped in front of him, let alone being able to sit at the table with the rest of us.

Anyway, he's back with us now

There is an expression that goes along the lines of :-

Grieving is a hard burden to have, but it is a burden worth paying twice for, because with no grieving there meant there was no love before.

Or something along those lines. I will be thinking that to help when my one finally goes.

I feel for you, 4 years ago we said no more dogs it's too hard to go through that again, it lasted 10 days before we got Betsy, this is our last dog we said, 4 weeks ago we got Mabel. Since getting married in 1980, we've only gone 3 months without a dog in the house, had 3 at one time.

Lady up the road has just lost 'Jackson' she said it upset her more than losing her mother.

One of the most difficult things I've ever had to do so I feel your pain but you have to think about how you gave your pal a good life and unfortunately it's the way these things go and we all know it when we get one, doesn't stop us doing it, and doesn't make it any easier when the time comes.
