Cattery Liability
Discussion
Hi all
Just after some opinions…
Cat went into cattery for two weeks in January. When it came out it wasn’t opening one eye.
We took it to the vet the following day. Eye drops given for a week. No improvement. Referred to specialist. Told multiple problems with it and needed operating. Cost estimate £3000-£4500. Plus the previous vets bills and consultation of c.£500. Agreed to go ahead, because he’s worth it.
Day of op comes, and turns out he also has a heart murmur so dodgy to operate.
Having a cardiogram tomorrow for c.£700 to see what can be done with that.
He was fine when he went into the cattery. A few days prior to the end of his two week stay there was already an issue with the eye (photo posted of Facebook and issue visable when zoomed in). We weren’t notified of this at the time or when he was collected. We had told the cattery when he was dropped off to take him to the vet/notify us if any health issues.
Do people think they have any amount of liability/responsibility? Duty of care etc?
It’s not known whether the eye could have been treated easier if he’d gone to the vet sooner or not.
I’m debating contacting them about it. Not convinced though, so just after other opinions.
Cheers

What are the potential causes of the eye issue?
Bottom eyelid is turned inwards. There’s an abrasion on cornea, and some sort of ulcer behind. Cause could be just scratching of the eye, then eyelid turning in as it’s all irritated. Or maybe the eyelid was turning in that caused the irritation.
The proposed surgery was reshaping eyelid, removing abrasion, then grafting if needed

So it may not be anything the cattery did? I presume you are working on the basis that they neglected your cat which increased the harm caused to the eye?
Sorry, yes. Purely that if the eye had been treated sooner, the treatment would have been easier/less expensive. It’s the unknown of when the injury flared up. If just a couple of days before we collected, likely wouldn’t have mattered. If two weeks, quite likely I’d guess
