Puppies prices getting ridiculous
Discussion
I've noticed over the last few years that prices of pretty much any breed of of dog, large and small, seem to be getting silly. Checking out a few dog sites even a Jack Russell (which isn't officially recognised by the kennel club - as far as I know) are selling for anything from £500-800. Daschunds are around £1000, Beagles about the same, GSD about £900, even crosses are selling for silly money. This is just ridiculous IMO.

Wife wants a dog, Cockapoo whatever that is.. £1000 starting.
Plus accessories it's easily £1500 to start.
Cockapoo's aren't even a recognised pedigree breed, they're just a cross, I don't know how anyone can sell them for that kind of money. Seems like some breeders/sellers are getting really desperate.Plus accessories it's easily £1500 to start.

Some of the prices mentioned sound cheap based on my experience- ex-wife paid £2,500 for a Labrador. Not even a pedigree. Absolutely cracking dog though
Yes, anything under £1k these days is very cheap. I remember back in 2008 we paid about £350 for our Labrador, but like you say £2k+ these days is the norm. To be fair, if you add up the cost of stud fees, vets fees, all the stuff you need for birthing and looking after a litter of puppies for 8+ weeks then I'm sure it adds up. Not saying people aren't making money, but if they are a responsible breeder rather than someone churning out litter after little, it's probably not as much as it might appear.
Our lab was free (perk of being related to the breeder). The rest of the litter went for about £2000 a pop 2 years ago. Prices for the last litter (roughly a year ago now) I think were around £1500.
Stud fee was I think around £1000 (for a FT Champ), vets bills I think about the same, plus hip, eye and DNA tests beforehand. 8 weeks of not far off 24/7 looking after a litter post birth, plus care of the breeding bh before, plus the time you can't work her, plus the risks to her. Genuine question - what would you charge?
Both litters sold fully through word of mouth - so could arguably be worth more on the "open market". The fact that these pups are selling for these prices is just in indication of what the market thinks they are worth.
In the grand scheme of things, the initial cost is buttons compared to the running costs. Considering insurance, food, dog walker, flea and tick treatment, vaccinations and vet bills I reckon we'd be doing well to get change from £4k/year.

That's insane money! We got our Black Lab for £400 in May 2020 and then rescued a Golden Lab (4.5 Month old) in July 21. She was a lockdown 2.0 puppy that no one wanted and we took her with a donation to the rescue charity.
I do remember seeing Lab's going for around £1500 at one point but £2500 is nuts.
