A comment in the Post Photos of Your Dogs thread had me thinking. You can probably remember your first car, why you bought it and so on.

So, I'm curious about what dogs you have owned or grown up with over the years and if you have stuck with one breed for example or like me had a selection. And which one is/was your favourite? Photos are always welcome of your old canine friends.

In order these are mine:

1. Grew up with Golden Retrievers which the family bred.
2. Golden Retriever (no surprise there then) - after getting married.
3. Chow Chow.
4. Dobermann.
5. Rottweilers x 2 (half brothers from same breeder).
6. English Bull Terrier bh (rescue) - she got on amazingly well with the 2 Rotties (neutered) but arthritis meant a premature end.
7. Rottweiler - current 10 month old dog.
8. Patterdale Terrier - current 11 week old.

Favourite? scratchchin Unfair question really but if pushed I'd pick my first Rottie.

American Pitbull (I'll have a debate with anyone who thinks they're aggressive cause mine was a marshmallow).

Pedigree staffy - Cindy - kennel name: Farostaff
Pedigree staffy - Snip - kennel name: Bannetyke Brinmarrion
Pedigree staffy - Baron - kennel name: Ken Ives Philas Boy

Mutt staffy - Poppy
Rescue staffy - Bruce - my current dog

None of the daft kennel names were anything to do with us!

The first three were my parent's dogs , the last two mine.

That list takes us from about 1968 to the present day

Now oddly enough, one of my Danes was called Griffin. I'm guessing trying to fit a GD into a TVR is a bit Tetris like!

  • Humphrey a fawn and black mask Pug, we had Humphrey from a puppy, from approximately 2003, towards the end of his life he sadly developed a common issue with "well bread Pugs" in his lower back, meaning he lost all feeling in his back legs and that area, no pain but paralysed. We almost had him PTS at about 8.5 years old as his quality of life was crap but we got him a pair of wheels which transformed him, meaning he lived to just over 10 years old, succumbing to (the vet thinks) kidney cancer, never tested but blood in his pee one morning meant it was sadly the end.
  • Daisy a Frenchie who is 10 now. We re-homed her at a year old, a month or so after Humphrey was PTS, wasn't looking for a dog, she just happened as her owner couldn't look after her anymore, we heard of her through a work colleague, Daisy is deaf and came from Spain, in her first year she had been moved around a lot between Spain and the UK and various homes.
  • 14m later Barry a Yorkie/Jack Russell came to us, a friends dogs were having puppies and we chose Barry.
  • 26m later Daphne came to us, she is Barry's sister (same parents), initially I was reluctant and it took alot pf persuading, she was the last of the litter to go, one day I just cracked and said yes.
Have to admit after having 2 flat nose dogs and 2 Terriers, it is Terriers or similar all the way for us in the future, far more hardy, can walk for miles and just fit our lifestyle better.

Cleo, black labrador, acquired soon after I left school. Went everywhere with me including university and lived a very long life, PTS at 16 (not long after the photo was taken) after she lost the use of her back legs.

Badger, Jack Russell / fell cross, bought from a dodgy character near Maldon for £130 which turned out to be good value. Sweetest, gentlest dog you could meet (unless you were a rat, in which case he would rip your head off). Like Cleo, lived to a good old age, PTS at 16 due to increasingly severe fits.

Alfie, came to me from the Retired Greyhound Trust shortly after Cleo died. I had always wanted a greyhound. Sadly suffered kidney failure after only six months.

Eddie (black) and Clive (white / brindle). Eddie came from the same place as Alfie, Clive came direct from his trainer. Both lived to 13 which is not a bad age for a greyhound. Gorgeous dogs who I loved dearly.

Bart came from the same trainer as Clive but bullied the other dogs so he went to live with some friends who had deerhounds.

Clive was very special, and when he died I didn't really want another greyhound as I was afraid it would have been exactly that, just another greyhound. Enter this idiot, a working-bred basset from an unplanned litter (father presumed to be a basset hound, but no idea which one). Boris a.k.a Bee, Bumblebee, Boris the Bitey Basset is now eight years old and might yet grow up at some point.

Wow, some excellent posts here chaps. 14 Great Danes yikes And I thought my feeding bill was big.

My first dog, the Retriever (called Captain), went to my in-laws at 12 months as he was on his own too much and went on every pheasant shoot with the beaters. He had a good life.

The Chow Chow (we called him Chogi) tried to bite our new-born son on two occasions so he went back to the breeder for rehoming with no kids.

The Dobermann was absolutely neurotic and very badly bred. Constant diarrhoea no matter what diet and permanent trembling and shaking. The vet wanted to put him to sleep. After two months went back to the breeder who refused to refund us. We sued her in the county court and she paid up the day before the case was due to be heard.

The two Rotties (Kes and Max) we chose after going to Crufts to meet the breeders. Became very good friends with the breeder we picked. They were just weeks apart but got on really well. Enlisted the help of a police dog handler with some training for the older one who responded well. The other lazy bd just liked to be petted.

A work colleague needed to rehome his Bull Terrier called Jester, and in a moment of complete weakness I agreed to take her. Went to his house to collect her and she tried to bite me. A proper mad character who had a couple of fights with the big Rottie. Vet accused me of dog fighting. Unfortunately she developed lumps on her joints which was arthritis and as they got bigger she couldn't get up. PTS at 9 years old.

After a long break with no dog, very nearly got a miniature Bull Terrier because of Jester, but decided on another Rottie (Max) and a Patterdale Terrier (Billy). Agree with the comment above about terriers walking/running for miles, this one has endless energy.

I am fascinated by all your posts. thumbup

They grow out of TVRs in the age of 3 or 4 months.
Our favourite runabout with Cerberus is still a Mini Clubman JCW R55.
People watching the dog heading for that car to get into it usually can´t believe what they see. yikes

Frontwheeldrive is a bit of a problem at the lights when having the Dane in the rear, though. weeping

I have two, Sky and Bond, but luckily the old man has a Mondeo estate for when I take them for a walk.

Cerberus is a brilliant name for a Great Dane and deserves some recognition.

Never had family dogs when I was a kid, but the condition of my GF moving in with me was that we get a dog. Who was I to complain.

Jack - Lurcher rescued via NCDL, now DogsTrust when he was about a year old. He died at a decent age after a happy life

Phoebe - we were given her when a friends Springer got their Border Collie. She was very much my dog and came everywhere with me. She died far too suddenly - we had her PTS due to an aggressive anal gland tumour. I was devastated.

Bo - another DogsTrust rescue - breeding unknown, but suspect pointer cross/Lurcher type. He was a gentle soul who really didn't know how to act like a dog. He never really wanted to play, but after a while, loved companionship and walks. We had to have him PTS at only 11 due to a tumour on his spleen that ruptured. That came totally out of the blue.

Just before Phoebe was PTS and just after getting Bo, we were given Chayse, our Whippet at six months. He had bitten a child in the house he was in and was going to be PTS by Social Services. He's our first Whippet and I wouldn't hesitate in having another.

The latest addition is Rex my Patterdale Terrier. He comes just about everywhere with me and sticks like velcro. He's so much fun and cheeky like a terrier should be.
