This rescue puppy thought to be a chow chow at 17 weeks. He was an illegal seized by border force.

became this at 2 years old.

He looks identical to similar chows of the same colour and size except he has erect ears, a longer snout and a smile. I wonder if he's actually a biscuit samoyed.

My dog has a brown nose whereas most samoyeds have a black nose.

What do the PH masses think he is, could he be a cross breed?

I thought it was blue tongues...

Amazing dog though, whatever it is! Whilst I'm not a dog expert, I'm pretty sure it's not a border collie!

I forgot about that. He definately has the black tongue. I'll go see if that can occur in a samoyed but maybe unlikely.

No black tongues for samoyeds but eurasiers have black tongues and chow/wolf ancestry.

Most eurasiers seem to be much darker but some are light. They come from Germany. My pooch was smuggled in from Bulgaria.

That's so funny because I went to get a border collie as mine died 4 year earlier. The Dogs Trust emailed me pics of the 'chow' before anybody else had seen him and after some research I adopted him :-) Was the best thing I've done in eons.

It came about because if I click on the photo it says 'Border collie?' over the top... You'd think the Dogs Trust would be rather better at breed ID than that nuts

^ That may have been from an earlier posting of mine :-) He's clever though and learns very quickly. Has a very strong hunting drive and a keen sense of smell.

Get a DNA test done see what they think the dog is made up of.

We have a Northern Inuit which is basically a Wolfdog, we knew exactly what his make up was as the breeder had given us a booklet on his lineage and all of their DNA tests. but did the DNA test anyway to see what they said.

It came back exactly as expected, German Shepherd, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, Samoyed & Grey Wolf.

^ Thanks. Tht's always a possibility but I'm just curious. He's definately got a lot of Chow in there, hence the black tongue but somehow he's got a Samoued's head :-). I'm going to assume he's a cross given both dogs probably share the same basal dna.

I’ve mentioned to you before I’ve grown up with Chows and parents bred and showed at Crufts through the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. owning for past sixty years. Parents good friends with Sheila Jakeman who ran the UK Chow rescue and Tanlap Chows who Dad would breed with/own.

I’ve encountered all different shapes and size. Traditional pointed nose than more recently the short stubby. I think he’s Chow not Samoyed.

Some pictures from my childhood

There’s a good group on FB if you can join called The Ultimate Chow Chow Group, home of UK Chows. Loads of helpful posts etc particularly with common problems.

I think he’s a chow/Samoyed cross. The second pic suggests he is the size of a Samoyed, which means taller and a bit longer than a Chow. His face isn’t quite a squashed as a chow but isn’t quite as smiley as a Samoyed.

Lovely looking dog, whatever he is.

Have a look through Tanlap’s history here http://www.tanlapchows.com/home.htm you’ll see how different some dogs can be, some even smooth coated. There were many long legged. Black tongue is definitely Chow. We couldn’t go on a walk without it being commented on.

Lots of famous owners historically too. This is Walt Disney’s dog after whom I think a scene from Lady and the Tramp came to be. Mum has a ton of books, history and photos, trophies and documents somewhere.

Definitely a lovely Chow. Some of them are quite bear like whilst others have more of a fox like face. I just think its where the breed has varied over the years

our Lilly (also 2 years old) smile

She's lovely and certainly more bear then mine. I'm quite surprised at how much variation there is.

Their common traits are the black tongue, absolute loyalty and outright stubbornness.

Sadly Alfie was PTS a few months ago. I miss him

He’d have loved this weather. Never liked a bed, always a cold floor and in particular would roll and lie in the snow all day. Quite common amongst them too.

Aww...Alfie was lovely and yes, Lilly has exactly the same traits - wont use a bed, sleeps on the floor, rolls in the snow and sits out on the deck at minus 5C for hours smile

Sorry to hear that Gretchen. My dog's really quite funny, loves to play around. We play attack in the hallway and he always runs passed me to make his escape before runing passed me again and again. He growls when he makes his escape, it's so funny. He's wonderful and probably not a typical chow, he learns things really quickly to and doesn't seem stubborn. Yep, he likes it cold.
