We have a new Kitten and I've been looking around for insurance for him.

Our last cat passed away from heart failure, his insurance didn't cover him as it was classed as pre-existing so I want to get the best possible plan for the new guy, including a lifetime policy.

Petplan wants £52 a month including a free month for 12k cover and ManyPets is offering £30 a month for 15k cover. On paper, ManyPets is trumping PetPlan in every category.

I know Petplan is highly rated by consumers and vets but I haven't heard much of ManyPets, it seems to be highly rated by review sites and consumers.

My research into older dog insurance led me to believe Petplan paid out, lots of others don't make it easy at all. I have a policy with another provider who will tell you if they are paying out 8 weeks after submission of a claim. However as I have elderly rescues it was the only way I could get a policy for anything like reasonable money.

I discounted Petplan as taking the piss with premiums. With my previous cat they got silly before she was even 5, and we self-insured after that.

Ended up with PDSA for my two new kittens. £11 each for £8000 Lifetime cover, £75 excess per policy year. They’re domestic moggies.

Not had to claim yet though. That said, my wife also volunteers (and used to work for) PDSA, so we saw it as supporting them and not just insurance.

Never heard of ManyPets but can vouch for PetPlan - we've got two cats, rehomed to us 11 years ago, aged 5 and 2. Had no trouble at all with PetPlan, our eldest (Snowy) was diagnosed with kidney issues a few years ago which took a number of tests and vet trips to decide on the course of action. He's been on daily medication to keep that under control ever since. No issue with Petplan covering that and anything else relating to that condition, even over multiple policy years. Only thing to mention is that there's an annual cash excess for any condition on each pet and then a percentage for each claim on top of that - some or all of that are because ours are getting on a bit now.

Absolutely no hesitation in recommending Petplan. Yes you'll pay a bit less elsewhere probably but I'd rather have the peace of mind in not having to consider finances in a life or death decision for our pets.

We pay circa £65/month for two 4 year old cats with Petplan.

They've been very easy to deal with for the claims we've had over the years (probably about £3k's worth).

Wouldn't go anywhere else.

Thanks for all the info.

My only concern with PetPlan is the yearly premium increases. £52 for a DSH kitten is quite high already. I'm worried about how much more it will increase yearly.

Just checked and we pay £78.55 per month for our two old codgers. There's probably some sort of multi-pet discount in there (car insurers take note!) but even if we assume our second was 50% off for that it's still not too bad compared to yours, considering one of ours has had several claims per year for the past few years. I don't think they push the premiums up terribly much, more that your excess increases as the pet gets older.

Possibly worth finding some comparable insurance (e.g. definitely "for life" cover), getting some quotes and calling to see if they'll match anything significantly cheaper?
