My wife and I are seriously considering buying a puppy soon, so all input and advice would be appreciated.

Would ideally want the dog to be fairly easy to toilet train and not be too loud or yappy. smile

I've done a lot of internet research, but real-world experience is invaluable.

Thanks in advance!

My sisters barks constantly and goes to the toilet in the house. Same as one of the lads at works.

When she brings it here it barks at everyone, settles then as soon as you dare move an inch it barks at you.

It's generally a huge pain in the arse then ot had the usual spinal problems which led to some very expensive operations (good luck finding insurance)

If you love yappy lap dogs that will have spinal issues then crack on.

My son has 1 which I look after 2/ 3 times a week. Love him to pieces but if you don't want yappy then forget it. Barks at everything and anything.
Also unpredictable, can be very spikey towards other dogs and people. I'm used to big dogs (st bernards) so not sure if it's just a small dog thing or just him being a asshole.
My nephew has a havanese(?) which sounds like might a better fit

Love my two but older one is hit and miss on lead with other dogs (but perfect in all other senses) and the younger one (16 weeks) is a wee monster and currently has stopped walking on lead but is very soppy and loves everything ……

Oh and neither yap - just bark when startled (can be easy to startle)

i have one who is 3.

i would say owning one is not like owning a dog, it’s like adopting a small child who will never leave you alone

We have three in the extended family, a mini dachshund is none of those things. They are all house trained but it took longer than any other dog and you have to be prepared to stand out in a cyclone with them, if they suffer, so do you. They are all well behaved for Dachshunds, however they are lovely dogs but are all opinionated little sts (I love them but they are relentless).

I would suggest you look at adopting a greyhound. unlike our Dachshund our greyhound sleeps for 23 hours a day, doesn't really bark much, is totally house trained, it took about a week after she was adopted to get it and is the most loving quite creature you'll ever meet, she is happy walking 1 mile or 8, a bit less now shes 12. Shes as happy at home or coming into the office with me, not much has ever phased her.

Indeed - they are more popular now than when I started adopting them nearly 20 years ago but still not the 'cutesie' choice.

They are wonderful dogs; I love them and was toying with adopting another to join our saluki and cocker spaniel, but it's looking like we may be adopting another saluki type. If that doesn't work out, we'll probably look at greyhounds again.

Lovely little dogs . I had one , Blenheim colour , she was a Beautiful wee dog and such a lovely nature. Make sure you buy from a good breeder with health checked parents . Most pure bred dogs, as I’m sure you’ll know, have their health issues and I think cavaliers have more than most and are prone to heart murmurs and other problems .
