Hi
Just after a sanity check
The cat was unfortunately run over. Missing 24 hours, not that unusual. Went searching, heard/found her in a run down garden a few hundred yards away. Cold & wet

Dashed to registered vet. Broken pelvis / vet says bladder etc may be damaged. Could squeeze out pee, bloody.

Wants that to work before consider op on pelvis

So £500 in with that vet
They do not have overnight so I had to take her to different place for overnight monitoring. @ £600
Pick up in morning, back to vet 1

Further nights may be reqd. Pelvis op a few more K no doubt

Normal?

If the pelvis was broken, your cat would be dead by now due to internal bleeding. It's one of the first things they would have done an emergency op on. The nightly fee seems quite high but we're a nation of animal lovers so pretty much suck up the price. Is your cat insured? Vets usually have a tendency to milk out as much time as possible when the humane thing to have done was to put them down in the first place. But OOH costs are massive as well.

The pelvis is a large bone. A break can be anything from open book to pubic rami. It won’t necessarily be fatal.

Yes you've been done over.
But that's normal for a vet, any others would cost the same or more.

The actual ‘square’ of the pelvis is intact, but the 4 points it joins the spine? are detached. Legs ok.
So that’s a big op in itself..
Insured but that limit is£100 overnight, that’s where I feel conned!

A few K insurance .

Maybe best to have her put down, see how she is tomorrow

You're poor cat must be in agony. I know it's hard and my heart is breaking to say this but I would have them put out of their misery.

Those costs sound about right

The vet should sort out getting your cat to a referral centre. The centre will give you an indication of cost and liaise with your insurer.

Speak to your insurer and to yourvet and referal centre. They can often work to cut the cost if you are maxxing out your pet cover.

Thankyou for the sympathy
Well dosed up, seemed remarkably happy in the car!
But not in a great place at the moment, will see what tomorrow brings

Good luck.
Ultimately, if the cat is happy, that is what matters.

I’ll run this past vet 1 in the morning

Can you use a vet that can do overnight monitoring? That would save all the car trips.

You were very lucky to find her; I hope she makes a full recovery smile

The costs are comparable with my vet where I had a similar situation, although a femur broken into 3 pieces. My vet do have overnight facility, and it was just shy of £1K.

The specialist added another £5K for their work, and he's going back tomorrow for an x-ray after his 8 weeks in a crate to see if it's okay.

If it is, then it'll be another 8 weeks in a room with no furniture before he'll be allowed out again. Just to give you some idea of timescales.

In that time, I've been sleeping on a mattresses in the room with the crate. He's currently snoring...

Hope it is a good outcome for you and your cat.

Will see how he goes today
Back at vet 1
They could operate later this week all going well. In house. Out same night.

The main problem now is that tail damaged/will need to be removed. Possibly poo incontinent due to nerve damage but that won’t be certain for some time.

Likely outcome an incontinent tailless cat

Is it fair on the cat, who knows.

Tail pull injury - it affects the nerve endings around the bladder and bowel. It can be an either or. Hopefully, treatable.

Ours had the same, plus ruptured diaphragm, broken leg and damaged paws. She's under the bird table frown

When I lived in the US my cat was run over, and had a fractured pelvis.

Total treatment was $1500 over a decade ago. The galling thing was the vet said as I was paying that "cats are extremely resilient, and would have healed itself".

I gave him a Paddington Bear long hard stare.

£500 seems right.

Tailless, not a big deal. Incontinent, more of a deal. But you don't know that for sure, he may not be.

Thanks yes
He’s at home tonight, in a medium cage, purring away.
Having the op tomorrow to fix the pelvis. Then home tomorrow evening.
The vets are very good. My initial rant was a bit uncalled for.
Fingers crossed !

The cat owes my wife one. He had been out 24 hours, which was rare. We walked around the area when it was quiet. Her rattling treats. Thought she heard meow. The cat was down what looked like a silted up disused well in a very run down houses front garden. I got down it to get cat out, wrapped in my jacket & straight to vets. He would have died there. Guess dashed there after being hit.

Glad you're cat is at home, and purring.
Hope the op goes well. Just shows how wrong I can be.
