We have known about this since vinnie was a puppy, the vet was happy to give it a year to see if anything dropped into place.
He is 10 months now and talking last night to the vet she does not think its dropping so surgery is the only option as it can cause problems if left.
Vet was a bit vague about recovery time.

Plan A simple op and can find lost nut 7-10 days walks on lead after few days no more the 10-15 mins
Plan B bit more of a cut running alongside his sack 10-14 days walk again after a week 10-15 mins
Plan C cant find it and will need full open up 14-21 days, keeping him calm still for as long as possible

pencilled in for mid december as we are off for two weeks anyways so tagging few extra days between me and wife no big deal.

Has anyone been through this and how do you keep a ball chasing spanial still for 3 weeks hehe

Our first Welsh Terrier had this issue - it's fairly common and I'm told it's seen by breeders as a very bad fault in a pedigree dog to the extent that they are supposed to cease breeding from the parent stock.

Our lad had both bks removed and I can't recall much of an issue, we kept him quiet for a few days then he was fine. Apprently it can greatly increase cancer risk if left up there.

He's now 14 and still bright as a button

Most of this is accurate and a good guide, vets now get so uppity about keep on a lead, do this, don't do that, it's all meant well and is probably for the best but all my hounds have been given a very laid back approach to post-op care, where I could have coped with any complicationsand and it has been fine......however, get it wrong and there will be extra hassle and cost, so a few extra days of "calm" will be a good thing.
If there is a retained/crptorchid testicle, then neutering is a very sensible thing to do, it is inheritable, so you shouldn't be breeding, but the other non-retained testicle could be left if you wish, you don't have to neuter, just don't breed.

Had dogs done in the past with no problems, but none with the hidden nut.
For health reasons he will be getting done mid december, he has 2.5 months to pop it out or lose them.
As much as i think vinnies offspring would be as handsome as he is, breeding was never something we had thought about.
