A bit of background...

I live in the middle of nowhere. It's peaceful. It's why I live here. Next door is the farmhouse that my barn used to belong to. Recently it sold and a retired farmer moved in on his own with two old sheepdogs. You know the sort, he wears overalls and wellies all day and his dogs are kept in a shed. And that's the problem.

He never seems to let them out. On the rare occasions he does, inevitably they find their way to ours for a Bonio and a fuss. But they've clearly been locked up for long periods because they bark constantly. And I mean constantly. From 0400 right through to 2300 at least. He's the most obnoxious bloke too. He is as unfriendly as can be. When he moved in, we were pleasant, went to hello, etc asked if he needed anything, just got a grunt and he wandered off. He keeps himself very much to himself, and his sister in law brings food daily and cleans his house.

Should I speak to her? She does at least seem approachable. I'd be happy to have his dogs here, I've got six cats, two dogs and 15 chickens, another docile pair of sheepdogs wouldn't cause any problem. They have zero stimulation and are staring at four brick walls all day every day poor things.

All that, and the noise is becoming a serious nuisance. However, the dogs welfare are my main worry.

Council for the noise, RSPCA for the dogs? The neighbour will like you even less for it of course, but what's more important, your right to peace and quiet, the dogs' right to a decent life, or him?

Sister-in-law might be the best bet first, them if no luck, the big stick.
