Just wondered if anyone could give a view on what this is growing in my dog's mouth. He's an 8 year old GSD. I asked at the vet's earlier, there was only a nurse available and she just said he needs to be seen by a vet, but since our little local vet (yes, come in now, we can see you straight away) was acquired by a large group practice (if the animal is still conscious, any one of a dozen vets will see you in, hmm, 2 weeks' time?) it's quite difficult to get a appointment quickly. Anyway, rant over, that's for another post!

It started a week or so back as a light patch, which we thought was just a skin wound of some sort, but since Friday has gone from a small swelling to this lump. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it, and when I poked and squeezed it he didn't twitch at all, so apparently not painful? Obviously he's a fair size, so for context I would say that's about twice the size of a pea. Very smooth, seems quite hard to the touch, and is in the skin of his jaw/jowls, not on the bone or the jaw. It protrudes more than is apparent in the pic.

I have managed to get a vet appt in a couple of days time but it's grown so fast that I'd really like to have some idea what it is.

Thanks in advance.

Not a vet and wouldn't want to hazard a guess, but just wanted to wish you well with the vet visit.

Try FirstVet video call. We get them free with Pet Insurance (Many Pets, but free for lots of other too). They are superb - really really excellent. worth paying for an appointment to put your mind at rest ?

Looks like some kind of cyst or abscess.

^ Agreed. I'd PM The Vet on here. He'll have an idea.

Yes, is it hard or soft would be my next check.

Thanks Moorx smile and thanks everyone for the replies. It seems quite hard to the touch, but (probably fortunately!) doesn’t seem to want to pop (eww!) not that I have tried hard, but it didn’t explode to a gentle pressure.

I’ll look up Firstvet tomorrow too to see if they can help.

I'm afraid that it is not possible to give you a meaningful answer from a photo alone, that would need to be seen in person and likely a sample taken.

Just to update - the vet doesn't know what it is, it had changed since the photo above and the surface is now ulcerated, so they have taken samples with a needle to send off to the lab and we await the results.
