Driving along the A22 today about 5 miles South of East Grinstead and I saw this sign.
I had to stop in the next lay-by, trudge back and take a picture.
Are there really that many incidents in a year?
More than 5 a week, nearly one a day - on one stretch of road.
I didn’t see any deer. I find it hard to believe.
What do others think?

It happens. It's bad on the A68 on the England/Scotland border as well.
The irony is it's an old Roman road called Deere Street....
Years ago I went to visit a mate in Edinburgh and was in a rather powerful hired Vectra.
Somewhere on a straight bit of road between Rochester & a place called Byrness I put my foot down to see how fast it would go...
That was when Monarach Of The Glen decided it would be a good idea to run across the road. Good job there was nothing behind me or coming the other way....no collision but I ended up at 45 degress across the middle of the road, soaked in water from a bottle of Buxton Spring that didn't have the cap on right and the interior was covered in BBQ pringles from a tube that I'd been stuffing my face with en-route.
I straightened up, thanked my lucky stars that there was no accident or damage & carried on my way. No sign of Mr Antlers - he was over the road & away. Was obviously in a hurry to get to his stag night.
I still think I can smell the burning rubber from the tyres to this day....

British Deer Society estimate between 40 and 74000 deer killed annualy in the UK
Approx 20 people a year killed in deer related accidents, making them Britains most dangerous wild animal.

Did the work experience kid come up with that estimate?oddman said:

Deer(y) me….I’m staggered Approx 20 people a year killed in deer related accidents, making them Britains most dangerous wild animal.
It’s usually sheep wondering onto the B roads locally (no trees, so the visibility is good) to graze...but I’m yet to hit anything. Even managed to avoid a hare last year.
Although spotted two deers in the woodland for the first time, Mrs got frightened (dog didn’t even blink).
Done some night driving in the early hours (long story - lost house keys), and there was a young deer stood by the side of the road. Luckily didn’t move.
Plenty of road kill on the rural roads too - usually birds (those weird ones that run instead of flying), a few foxes and rabbits.
Typical example:

I live on the Ashdown Forest, the answer is that sign hasn't been updated in a long time but yes, there are likely that many incidents or more!I had to stop in the next lay-by, trudge back and take a picture.

They used to cull the deer on the forest but since Covid they haven't had one (that I've been aware of), deer numbers are very high. It's rare that when walking the dog in the morning I don't see a heard of deer! Some quite open roads there and tempting to drive quickly but be very careful at dusk and dawn, especially on the bends between that Wych Cross and Forest Row, a popular crossing point.
