Almost lost Moose last weekend to Bloat/GDV. Luckily after a mad drive through single track roads to an emergency vets and a several hour operation he is on the mend.

If you have a deep chested dog, or other breed which is susceptible to bloat then it's worth knowing the signs, as they really need surgery quickly if they're going to make it.

Signs of bloat:
  • Retching, no vomit
  • Pacing
  • Faster breathing/heart rate
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Drooling
  • Distress
  • Often see gums going more pale, sometimes hard to notice or know if it's changed.
Bloat is one of the biggest killers for Great Danes, and Moose is a very lucky boy. When he started showing symptoms we were on a campsite 3 miles of single track road from a mobile phone signal, and 9 miles from a town with a vet. On Bank Holiday Friday evening.
