Hi

Whilst walking one of the fields this evening, I’ve found a Canada goose nest on the bank of one of our ponds.

We have foxes around here that manage to get any errant chickens that don’t roost properly, so I reckon there’s a good chance the fox could get them.

Now I’ll happily shoot Canada geese as they can be a real pest, but these two don’t seem to be doing much harm and they’re on a grass field.

I’m trying to think of the best way of protecting them whilst still eggs… if they manage to hatch I can build a little island for them.

Do I fence them off? Going to be a pain to do, might not work and might scare mum off.

Leave them and hope for the best? High chance the foxes will have them I think. Will regret not doing anything.

Make an island in the pond and move the nest onto there? Good chance they will then be abandoned?

5 eggs in the nest. Will try and get on top of the foxes but struggling for time.

Answers on a postcard… cheers

Geese are very protective of their young.

Leave them to it.
