Just before going to bed I let the dog out so he can relieve himself. I was doing the same in the downstairs bathroom. Got up and the biggest cockroach I’ve ever seen ran between my legs. A good 8 cm I would estimate. A very loud expletive slipped through my lips and I vacated the bathroom at speed.

I let the dog back in and wondered whether he would do me a favour and finish off the cockroach. I directed him to the bathroom and he sniffed under the sink where the roach was sitting. They stared at each other, the roach twitching its enormous antennas. Dog turned round to me, gave me “no fking way” look and backed off! I looked around and found a washing up bowl and used that to hammer the roach to death. Five or six blows and the bugger was still twitching. Managed to pick it up and flush it down the loo, although then I had to go around and pick up all the bits that had flown off when I was giving it a beating.

My mother tells me that when she lived in Saudi her two cats would kill any cockroaches or other large bugs that dared enter her apartment. Clearly I need one of those rather than my “I’m a lover not a fighter” dog!

I'm not sure what my cat would make of an 8cm cockroach. Probably just bat it around a bit then lose interest.

How about staying with dogs, and breeding a 10cm long 'New Zealand Roach Terrier'?
