Our dog found his woof about eight months ago. Not a problem in itself; he gets a bit barky when it's time for a walk.

Over the past month or two, in the evenings, he's taken to jumping up every half hour or so and demanding to be let into the garden, at which point he runs round the fences shouting "Woof" at nobody, for that is who is there. I suspect he saw a cat or fox or something there at some point.

In the last week, he's done the same thing every night at 2 or 3 am. He sleeps on the bed (yes, I know, but he has a chronic medical condition we like to keep an eye on), so it's a bit disruptive.

Mrs D thinks he has heard or smelled something, but I'm not so sure because our bedroom overlooks the garden at the front of the house, and he goes straight to the top of the garden at the back of the house.

I reckon he's dreamed there's somebody in the garden, so wakes up and has to go and check.

It's bloody irritating, either way. Any ideas on how to make him stop?

You can tell when an animal is dreaming, they're in a really deep sleep and will twitch, whine, whimper etc.
Given you'll already be asleep it's a bit difficult to see him in this pre-woken state though!
It's more likely he's heard something.

I'd hazard a guess the your dog smelt or heard something. A dogs sense of smell is astonishing when they want to use it to their advantage!

Agree he must have heard something. Do you keep the windows open, or any wild animals in the local vicinity?

We have a family of foxes who live in the fields behind our house and sometimes you can hear them playing / fighting and it always sets off our dog. He is very noise sensitive so it doesn't take much to set him off.

No open windows. Presumably there will be foxes and stuff nearby, but I've never heard them, even in the summer.

The frustrating thing is, until a month or so ago, he wasn't bothered - even in the warmer months when doors and windows were open.

It's you, farting under the duvet. He thinks there's a Gruffalo in the garden.

Daisy my Frenchie makes some weird noises in her sleep, kind of a low yelping and then she will bark just out of the blue but will remain asleep, her sleep barking freaks out Barry and Daphne.

The whole waking when they hear something outside is interesting as I find it fascinating how they are able to filter out what they should wake for and what they should stay asleep for, they can be asleep with the hoovering going, the radio, the TV, us getting up to go into another room and yet the slightest unusual noise outside they instantly wake and are alert.
