Indoor aquarium - hair algae
Discussion
Don't know if this is the right forum, iof not mods please move it but anyway, here goes
We've got a Juwel tank and filter and tropical fish. Had it for about four years but over the last 8-9 months we've had a major infestation of hair algae. Google it if you're not aware what it is, but it's really spoiled our tank to the extent that we lost a lot of fish and plants. I've fitted new (£170) LED lights, several major water changes, tried different chemicals as recommended by Pets at Home and a local fish specialist, Maidenhead Aquatics, but can't get rid of the stuff. Every day I rip a good handful out of the tank and it's peeing me off.
Anyone any ideas please 'cos SWMBO's suggesting we get rid of the whole shebang.
TIA

Is the tank in direct sunlight? I used to have this issue and reducing sunlight exposure helped.
Also, do you have living plants? Planted tanks are a dark art that i still haven't mastered. It seems like you can have one plant that will thrive and that will encourage 1 type of Algae. Make any changes and another plant will thrive, the first will die and the algae will change. Plastic/fabric plants are far easier.

What fish/shrimp etc have you got in the tank?
How long are the lights on each day?
Is the tank in direct sunlight?
How frequently do you normally carry out partial water changes?
Do you have live plants/imitation plants(silk or plastic?/mosses/no plants at all?
If you have live plants what plant feed do they get incl CO2 as liquid or gas?
What chemicals/treatments have you tried so far?
Which type of hair algae is it?
