Hi

Did a quick search. We have recently rescued a three year old dog. He was Spanish but now living with us in the UK. He is reasonably small approx 10kg and a Pekingese/ dachshund cross plus a few other varieties I suspect.

Any recommendations for pet insurance??

Thanks

Mike

If you're over 60 the The Dogs Trust do it for about £12 PA but you'll need to find vet care.

Thats third party liability...or does OP want something like PetPlan to pay any vets bills...

Bought by many - all of mine are covered by them now.

Pet plan got too expensive over the past few years.

2 of mine are with Agria, they were one of the providers that the vet my daughter worked for at the time recommended when I took both policy's out out.

Not had to use them so haven't got any experience ref making a claim.

It seems Pet Plan is generally the best but it is big bucks.

We had Pet plan for our chocolate lab, but they only paid £2500 when she did her cruciate ligament, was about £60 a month, then wouldn't cover that joint anymore, so we stopped. I think total cost for treatment and physio was £6-7K, so I'm wondering if to just put £60 a month away in a separate pot

Has anybody discovered a vet care plan only option?

As in x amount per month which covers flea and worming, annual boosters and check ups?

If so yes, I pay £17 per month per dog, direct through my vet.

We do the same via our vet too - particularly useful for (excuse the visual image this may bring' but 'emptying her anal glands' as our Maisie has them in a funny position so normal number two's don't express them how they are meant to. Local vets have been brilliant with her, always worth getting a recommendation from others with dogs you know locally

I was thinking more of insurance in case of more serious events. Surely there's a vet plan somewhere that I've not found.

Not getting you I'm afraid, what "serious events"?

Injury or ongoing sickness that requires veterinary care? I already have extensive third liability cover with a few extra's but don't want to go down the Pet Plan route.

Why not? Pet Plan, BBM etc are exactly for covering serious events. Vet plans tend to be for regular stuff like worming etc as another poster said. We have both for our pooch, not sure why you want general insurance from a vet specifically?

Pet plan is not the cheapest and the excesses get worse and worse as the animals age, but they are generally good at paying up.

Have a five year old and a one year old. Over that period we started with pet plan, no claims made, and the premiums just kept going higher and higher, had enough and two years ago moved to Bought by many, made a claim in the first year of 7k, renewal actually didn't increase by as much as expected , so stayed another year with them, this year premium was stupidly high, so now with Asda.

Pet insurance is no different to any other insurance, there is no best one, shop around every year is the only way.

When I initially looked at Pet Plan it seemed to offer things i didn't need and seemed expensive. I took out the public liability from the Dogs Trust for £12 PA. It also included some extras that gave me peace of mind. They'll look after my dog if I get ill and rehome him if I can't have him back. I don't really want to pay for the TPL again when my needs are more about veterinary care. last time I looked around it was a minefield. I'll have to look again :-)

Apart from the fact that once you've claimed for an illness, that will be excluded by any future insurer.

If you do that, you will not be able to claim for pre-existing conditions.
