Found a number 2 in the kitchen sink last week, first time ever, and then caught him having just done a wee in there a few days later.

Admittedly, both cats seemed to enjoy using our bathroom sinks instead of the litter tray (this was before we allowed them outside as it was a new house) but they'd never used the kitchen sink. Keeping bathroom doors shut obviously stopped this problem.

I'm wondering if this was just a one off because the weather outside is getting colder and wetter and he was just being lazy and decided the sink was a nicer option. Not done it since as I made it pretty clear to him that this was a naughty thing to do.

our 14 year old did start to do that but in the bath, and near the front door on the mat, previously always outdoor or litter tray, vet put it down to age and dementia, sadly we had to say goodbye 6 months after, so hopefully yours may just being weather fussy, might be worth a trip to the vets just for peace of mind

I was hoping that wouldn't be the answer, but feared it might be. My cats will be 14 in March. But they seem totally normal and lively etc other than this slight change in toiler behaviour from one of them. That said, this same one does sometimes 'wail' randomly which I've seen from Google is a thing that is linked with dementia frown

Did your cat start making it a regular habit, as this seems like it was a one (twice) off at the moment.

We don't have any litter trays now that they're happy and settled in this new home (been here a year now) and they both use the cat flap we installed to get outside.

Really? At our last place we lived there for 6 years and never had litter trays once they'd got used to going outside.....

You think we need trays due to age? I think I'll wait and see if this use of the sink gets worse before bringing litter trays back into our lives.

What might have happened in the past is irrelevant, the cats actions are speaking loudly, not aexactly a chore for two litter trays?

Well I think everyone can agree that litter trays aren’t exactly pleasant and cleaning them is no fun task. So just wondering if that’s a totally necessary requirement if there’s a possibility my cat simply didn’t fancy the weather outside at that particular time, that’s all.

we only realised our cat had been going differently when we moved a mat, and the core matting underneath was damp and little bit smelly, replaced that and treated with proper urine spray, but then after that was bathgate, on a regular basis, and after the vet visit, we did realize that the end outcome would be the same, vet advised probably kidney issues as well, but due to her age we didn't want a load of tests etc

sorry to hear your going through this op, as yours ours didn't really show any other signs, happy - purring, just the small things led to the final decision, deffo worth getting the vet to check,, as the calling can be as you said signs of dementia,

Yeah I think you're right, a trip to the vet is no bad idea, after all we'd do anything for our little friends. Hopefully it's nothing, he hasn't done any strange toileting since I posted this, and the wailing is very rare and short lived, I usually just call his name and he comes running and cuddling up to me.
But at 14 years old, I guess I need to be "aware"

Edit: what age was your cat when this started happening?
Edit edit: just seen, 14 you said above.
