So swmbo and I seem to have hit a bit of a stumbling block where I prefer a chihuahua and she doesn’t biggrin

Truth be toId we can’t agree to the point that it seems like there will be no dog. We wanted a small pickupable dog with character that also doesn’t mind a walk. I’m really hung up on the chi. To me it’s the perfect little characterful dog. The dog I see putting on my bike or in my bag or taking on a walk. Any owners care to share your experiences and hopefully pics too ??

There has to be a compromise.

Just to close this off we have now reached a comprise. Which involved words like “shut up” and “do as you are told”. I can work with that. It takes away all indecision smile

As you were.

When a previous flame and I were looking at dogs, I wanted a Newfoundland (big and fluffy), she wanted a Maltese (small and fluffy). In the end the little one arrived and couldn't ask for a better dog. No matter what breed you get all the best

How did she react when you said this to her?

We've got a chihuahua and a staffy.
The chi is great fun, I always thought they would be a boring dog who likes to be carried. She will walk for miles, loves the countryside and even hunts mice.
Typical chi, she is scared of noise such as fireworks and bangs, yet will back at absolutely everything that goes past the house.
Plays with the staffy and even bosses the in laws Rotty about.

We've inherited a chug, (chihuahuas x pug)

Not sure I'd take to her but she really is the sweetest loyal dog. A real lap dog.

She has some issues we're working on, it's taking time but we seem to be making progress.

Pub training not going well, and keeping to quiet places for walks.

Not sure if nature or nurture but the red mist comes down then reactive and barks at people/dogs randomly. Will fly at strange dogs unless distracted. Whines and barks in the car (although we think we're getting to the bottom of this one)

7 yrs old, clingy like a puppy but doesn't play with dogs, people or toys. Very likely to urinate (in excitement) if you put her harness on.

House trained understands a few commands and generally obedient decent recall (unless red mist is down or discarded food is found)

Probably a fine companion dog for an old lady (this one was) but wouldn't recommend as a family dog or novice owner.

I’m gay ??

I’m not but that’s just your opinion of the dog. As others have shown here they are a lovely little dog.

For what its worth my little Chi is not barky or yappy (but he has lived around big normal dogs all his life)

Things to note, they have bags of character, watch out for their teeth (you must clean them)

Also when they are young especially keep them jumping on and off things to a minimum. Depending on surface types in your house be careful with this. There legs and joints etc are very fragile when they are young.

Also they do not get on with kids (or if one of you is a bit hyperactive)

We have a rescue Chihuahua now 9 years old and I concur with all the above except ours loves children and loves people, has never once snapped at anybody.

As above her teeth had been neglected by her previous owner and we had to have a lot of them taken out, but her breath is now very sweet.

She gets on really well with our Labrador, they play fight a lot, and gets on well with our two cats, but the cats are in charge.

She is also a very fussy eater and will leave her food for 2/3 hours before she eats it, and loves bringing mouthfuls of biscuits into the lounge and plonks them on the floor at the feet of our Labrador before eating them one at a time.

The Labrador just sits there watching and never attempts to eat them. Her food is always gone in 30 seconds

We have a Malchi which is a Chihuahua Maltese cross. A very friendly dog lacking the Chi's aggression around other dogs. Still barks a lot though.

Thanks all we have decided we are going for a Yorkie or Jack Russell/Chi cross. Really looking forward to having another dog in the house. Really feels like we are missing something.

Good choice the ones we have seen have been lovely dogs. I was never a fan of small dogs but being able to carry them can really be a godsend.
