We lost one of our labradors a few weeks ago now. She'd been on medications for her back legs for a while and we still have some unopened packs. Does anyone know what is the best thing to do with them?

We've asked the vets and one of the local dog homes and they are not interested, so would appreciate any better ideas before just disposing of them.

Thanks.

Technically you would be breaking the law by giving them to someone else use. Your vets should take them and DOOP (dispose) them for you.

Thanks for the reply, I think I'd be est getting back in touch with the vets. I suspect some miscommunication must have occurred.

Return to your vet if that is where you got it from, it's always disappointing to throw away perfectly good meds but that is the daft rules we live by.

Or keep them for use with one of your other animals under direction of your vet at a later date.

Once they have left the practice building then it cannot be guaranteed that they have been stored correctly ( usually <25 C) and so cannot safely be dispensed to another animal...

OP, sorry to hear of your loss. It's a sad place to be. When I lost my dog I might have given the expensive painkillers to other owners who's own dogs were on the same prescription. When I realised that may be illegal I rethought matters.

Very sorry for your loss. Its a pain with the meds, but tbh I keep any unused if I think it may be needed again. This is mostly pain killers and steroids as our boy has recurring allergies and ear infections.

Other than that it is a case of returning to the vet.

OP, i'm sorry.. i didn't fully read your post, just the topic.

Sorry for my completely insensitive and inappropriate response. I've just deleted it.

Sorry for your loss, i've been there and it hurts like hell.

Morning all

Thank you for your thoughts and taking the time to reply.

I don't like stuff doing to waste, so would have preferred them to been useful elsewhere. However I couldn't guarantee how well they have been stored, even though sealed. I'll try again with the vets (as I recall the last batch was bought online), otherwise the chemist and claim my parents got confused.

Of course Cocoa didn't really appreciate the meds herself, but usually a cheese triangle would allay her concerns, but not always. We did have a battle of wills one day...
