I've been warned off one of my regular walks by a canal by local dog walkers.

I'm told 6 dogs are ill and vomiting, some sort of virus picked up, the common denominator being the towpath (south Warks) apparently particularly prevalent in wet winter weather.

They couldn't remember the virus name, I'm assuming it's not alabama rot or they would have known.

I'd like to do some research, any ideas what this virus might be?

Possibly they are referring to Giardia

More diarrhoea symptoms than vomiting but certainly seems to be an increase in cases recently

I'm not sure if Alabama Rot has vomiting as a symptom, it's more unusual hot spots & lesions that spread don't heal

Thank you.

I've been avoiding the offending area, trouble is it's one of the few local walks that doesn't involve wading though mud!

I'm not sure if anyone properly understands precisely what causes Alabama Rot but there seems to be links to stagnant water although i don't think it is conclusively proven. Always worth washing dogs feet after a walk- for salt as well this time of year. But I don't think it's caused by a virus.

Leptospirosis can be found around water but most responsible dog owners should have had their pups vaccinated before going near wet areas. It’s possible that these dogs weren’t I guess. Alabama Rot is extremely rare so I’d be surprised if it was that. Yes, possibly giardia. My dog is just getting over it herself, although she had no vomiting, just diarrhea. Our vet said that there’s been a massive increase in the prevalence of the parasite over the last year, possibly due to the increase in dog ownership during lockdown.

Thanks for the replies.

We've been avoiding the area, fortunately the grounds firming up elsewhere, making other routes feasible.
