was just reading another thread a week ago, welling up as there was some lovely and heartfelt messages, our little nali went out of the blue, finally just after midnight, tuesday. He was 12, but up until the day before had been eating, chasing around, and lounging in his dinghy in the hot tub sunday, something that all 3 of our chihuahuas loved.

When our last chihuahua went aged 15, we had him to distract us, now there is big gaps where his bed was, where he was in the window. dont really know what to say, just trying to celebrate what we had with him, but god its tough. Such a character, pneumonia just got him, even after an all clear at the vet hospital early hours of the morning before. RIP little man xxx

Sorry for your loss. Looks like you gave him a great life though. Are you going to get another little man?

not really sure, never had the empty house before, still got our 14 year old cat, so still some furry giving some distraction. not sure if we would go for puppy, said we would give ourselves a bit of time, and not sure if we could go through this again. As we have been working from home since feb last year, was literally 24/7 with him, its the stupid things like cooking an extra bit of bacon this morning, as he loved that then realising he wont be coming into the kitchen.

they say times a great healer, hope its sooner rather than later

My condolences. I've never had to have an animal put to sleep, but I know the pain of suddenly losing your dog.
Our 11½ year old Cavalier's heart simply gave up mid walk a couple of years back.
I couldn't bring myself to move her bed or water bowl away. Lasted about 2 weeks before I knew we needed another dog. Turns out our new puppy was born just 5 days after Pepper died.
Getting a couple of nice photos printed and hung above her bed has been a great way to remember her.
You'll know what you need to do.

Feel for you OP.

I have had dogs go suddenly, and those that have hung on for ages.

It is just sh*t either way.

My old cocker is getting very old now. He used to sleep upstairs on the bed but he is now sleeping in the downstairs bedroom, so I am with him pretty much every hour of the day.

I wouldn’t be without a dog, despite all the pain when they go.

Who me ?

Deffo feel for you. I've had it once ,when I feel I let my pet down . Old Toby was a large Cairn. Possibly a cross as he was so heavy whilst not overweight. He never thieved and we worked on the principle that if something ended up on the floor that he could have ,it was his to enjoy. But up to the day before he passed on, he was still the very (exceptional for a 12 year old dog) lively dog. He was heavy up to the end, but the weight was down to some form of cancer that I'd failed to spot and under his heavy coat he was skin and bone.
Shona came and for all of her life she was a very active dog, but one I'd seldom been able to keep at a perfect weight. on a walk she might dwadle, but if she found a thrown away bit of fast food, it was pounced on in seconds. Squirrels or the occasional rat- she was like lightening up to her last day. She'd had a slight problem with one leg one day, so I took her to vet. Diagnosed as possible strain,. Bed rest advised. Two days later, she lost use of rear end. We took her out in the garden to let her relieve herself. She did and started to crawl to her favourite place. I took her to vet. Choice- long possibly painful treatment with no guarantee of cure, with her not being able to get out to do her business or PTS. I swear she knew what she wanted as she just looked at me and her eyes said it all "let me go" . Not a nice choice, but her choice.

Ours is 12 this month, still bright as a button and mental but getting a bit lumpy, can see the cataracts coming and the vet has picked up that his heart murmur is getting worse so he is on meds for that now.

So, he is in the latter stages of life, might be today, might hang on for 5 years, you never know.

I am trying to prepare myself mentally for that, they are just woven into your life, things like going downstairs in the morning, if the wife has been up before me, he appears from a bedroom and I sit on the top stair and he is made a fuss of, at 9 pm or so he appears and stares me down until I take him for a walk, having spent an evening usually barking at the telly and polluting the atmosphere.

He was at the vets all day yesterday and the house seemed empty, going to get food and no little hairy gannet appearing is weird. Going for a pee without an audience, no scratching whilst sat in front of a radiator, which once made me open the door and see if I could see the Chinook I thought was passing over.

He is a nuisance sometimes, drives the wife mad, but despite being grumpy on occasion myself, I just never really get annoyed by him, every time he appears I am glad, the kids never tired of him and love him to bits, they live away by and large and miss him when they are away.

Am trying to imagine what it will be like and not much really phases me but that just gets me, bloody dog !

thank you all for sharing, we still have our 14 year old moggy as a bit of distraction, and for fussing, then 2 hours ago, hear an almighty banging noise, shes gone down the stairs then fell into the wall, rushed back to the same vets where we said goodbye to Nali, looks as if low potassium levels, which they are treating, and poss kidney issues, cant believe were here again, they will keep her over night, we have already boxed up one set up possessions, cant bear the thought of doing it again. as long as everything is done for the best for her

Vets are aware if she goes really down hill to let her go, with Nali, they brought him back twice, when we had asked not to , everything crossed for our lovely lulu, this was them just over a week ago, god that windowsill is empty

Blimey. That's the last thing that you needed right now.

Thoughts will be with you and Lulu tonight.
