We have our Golden Retiever since 19th Dec - we got him at 8 week and his name is Solo. For the most part he's been fantastic bar some blood in his poo. I've brough him to the vet 3 times now as on a couple of occsions the poo was very sloppy.

He's been given a probiotic the first time, a course of tablets the second time then probiotic the 3rd time. The poos the last week has returned to normal - solid but there are still traces of blood.

Should I be worried? Should I try another vet? Is there anything else I should do? He's in great form, gets a few short walks each day, loves playing, eats all his food (Royal Canin Maxi Puppy), drinks plenty and generally is brilliant craic.

Thanks

Has he eaten something he shouldn't? We had a mild panic with our lab puppy and it was a bit of vet bed going through her that seemed to cause the upset - no blood, just loose poo. Blood would have made me a lot more nervous and (like yourself) would be a trip to the vets.

Has he had his second round of jabs? I make him nearly 14 weeks, so right around the time he would have had them, but depending on who you believe, not yet fully immune from the second jab.

If I was you, I'd be getting a second opinion - maybe speak to the breeder as well just for some advice?

Your vet will know far more (especially since they have actually seen the dog) than some strangers on the internet will and a second vet will either back that up or suggest a different course of action. Does your insurance have any form of video vet that you can just have a chat with for an opinion?

He's had his second round of injections so should be ok. I'll give the vet a call today to see what they think.

I'll have a look at my insurance to see what it covers.

It may be worth getting pup checked out for giardia. Our 7-month-old lab has had intermittent diarrhea and blood over the last few months. She was first diagnosed with colitis, then enteritis. I finally took a poo sample in and it came back positive for giardia three days later. It’s a tough bugger to shift and often several course of meds are needed. It’s also quite tricky to spot - apart from mucus and blood in the poo. Lila was absolutely fine in herself and there was no weight loss or vomiting. We initially put it down to hungry lab pup eating anything and everything!

Came here to say exactly this. Our lab puppy had this, and it was a bugger to figure out! Does the poo stink (worse than normal)? If it does, there's a good chance it's giardia!

Colitis is more a description of the symptoms than a diagnosis, red blood in the faeces = colitis, and giardia is a high possibilty of being the causal agent, although some times it can be due to a "sensitive" bowel. Panacur is a good treatment for giardia but it can certainly take a couple of rounds of treatment.

Went to the vet and they have given him more probiotics and a treatment for giardia - fingers crossed this clears it all up.

Great. Let us know how you get on. Lila’s just finished her first round of Panacur (5 day treatment). I’m not optimistic it’ll clear it first time though. And while I remember, another symptom of Lila’s giardia has been the most horrendous gas. It can clear the room in seconds. I’d just put it down to hoovering up everything in her path whilst out walking!

ETA: I’m not sure where you are but our vet said that she’s seem a huge increase in the prevalence of giardia over the last year in north London. I’m not sure if the increase in dog ownership during lockdown is to blame.
