itchy paws after a walk - cause and treatment ?
Discussion
thanks for any help, only happened twice, both times when we had been down to the marina to check our little boat, our dog walked fine to the pontoon, then gets carried onto the boat as he's only small, within 20 minutes hes licking and kicking back his paws, little bit like they do when they have been to the loo, rinsed it with some water whilst down there, and then when we got home gave a bath with his sensitive shampoo. Marina say nothing had been sprayed or treated, it was all 4 paws, couldn't see anything sharp when walking back to the car.
Just wondered if there was something we could bathe with to ease the irritation, vet advised before half an antihistamine tablet, which we gave. some one also suggested 50% apple cider vinegar and 50% water as a spray or foot soak. Seems fine today 12 hours later, and never happens when back from his regular walk.
thank you

Could there have been salt/grit put down if it was icy? That can irritate their paws.
In terms of treatment, I should have thought straightforward water in a bowl/sink would be sufficient, maybe add some dog/baby shampoo. You can protect their paws with paw wax if you're concerned.
ETA - I think sometimes their paws get irritated if they get cold then warm up, I guess they maybe get 'tingly' like our fingers do?

Camomile tea is a great antiseptic cleaner. Make a couple of bags worth in a cup and steep until it’s cool enough to use. Either use cotton pads, flannel etc and wash the paws down and dry well. You can rub some paw balm on before going out for a walk as a barrier for them. There’s all sorts around from salt/grit, plant seeds, weed killer etc. Hope they are better soon.
