Hi guys,

Our cat (domestic medium hair) is usually pretty good at keeping his coat in good condition.

However, he came in last night with a lot of matted fur - in particular in an around the base of his tail (on his back) and also his tail itself (which is particularly long and bushy). From the looks of it - it could be dried poop or mud. I'm going to hope its mud - because although he smells, it's not too strong.

I've tried to "brush" it out with a stiff grooming brush, and I've also tried to gently clean it with a damp cloth. However, he hates it, and also it doesn't seem to be making much difference.

Just wondered if anyone had any tips? Should I persevere with trying to help him sort it out, or should I leave him to clean it off himself when he's ready?

Thanks,

Steve.

If it's any help, I sometimes have to put our Siberians in the bath.

They don't like it.

I wear thick leather gloves now, as I like my arms in one piece.

It works, and they become much less fragrant for a few hours.

The following day (or at most 2 days later), I have to bath them again.

It gets better in summer, when the coats aren't as long.
