I walk most days and my usual walk takes me over some downs which are popular with dog walkers. Which is absolutely fine (apart from the dog st everywhere), I like dogs and used to have one (I trained it to come when it was called - radical concept), but the amount of large untrained dogs lunging at me is getting to the point where I'm seriously considering something more pleasant, like walking along a motorway!

What I do know is that there is zero point remonstrating with the owner of an out of control dog. When I had one getting quite aggressive toward me recently (my normal strategy is to stand quite still until it goes away, but sometimes they don't) and asked its owner to get it under control, I was told that I 'shouldn't go to dog walking areas if I don't like dogs' (along with the usual 'Eees just bein friendly').

Anyway, mentioning this to a friend recently and apparently you can get handheld ultrasonic dog repellants which ward them off, which sounds like a fantastic idea!

Anyone tried this? Do they work in this situation? Any recommendations?

This one works on cats too by the look of it. Look at the pain on their little faces! frown

Buy a pet sheep. When the dog approaches it, shoot the dog.

I wonder if it's the standing still bit that's causing you grief? Either that you've got pockets full of bacon?!

I walk up a local hill 2 or 3 times a week and must pass half a dozen dogs each time, an occasional one will give me a quick sniff as I pass but I've certainly never felt harassed.
I've tried carrying on.

I suspect you live in a bit nicer area than me (cue the 'should have worked harder at school' quips). Unfortunately dogs seem to have become the chav accessory of choice these days, and we're not short of chavs where I live...

If that works as advertised it would be absolutely perfect! 😄

Ah not sure what happened there!

It might be that, tricky one - I'm not convinced that the sound repellent would work well enough to stop a dog in that scenario.

I think he’s worried it’s going to fall out of the man’s massive hand and crush him. The cat is worried for the dog.

Glitch in the Matrix I think...

Yes, that's my concern, hence wondering whether anyone had had any experience with these?

I had a dog that went for me as I was out for a walk. As it sprinted at me, ears back, tail folded in, teeth bared, I got down on all fours and sprinted at it, growling as I went for it. I've never seen a dog turn tail so quickly, or a middle aged woman st herself as her doberman cowered in the bushes.

As most chavs are teens, you can get the teenager repellent ones too.

Little water pistol is way cheaper and probably more effective. Just don’t buy a plain black one.

Or failing that carry a wee handful of dog treats , that will hopefully make the dogs more agreeable

You could carry a plastic water bottle with some stones in it. When the dog comes at you shake it hard - the dog will do a runner. The owners shouldn’t be put out by that. If you walk the same area, the dogs will soon learn to steer clear.

Loud noise, they really don’t like it. Our dog trainer showed us that one when our puppy was doing a lot of biting. Works a treat

Interesting. I might look a bit weird out for a walk with my bottle of water and stones though, rattling it vigorously at people's dogs! biggrin

I'd rather something discreet I could keep in a pocket.
