He's the runt of the litter but we'll be picking him up Jan 1st !

not sure on names yet, thinking about Hugo ?

his colouring will become more golden/beige

No experience with puppies - but owner says he should be just about house trained by the time we pick him up.

currently shopping for a whole host of things
- beds
- toys
- large pen
- carrier for car
and a whole ton of puppy pads and food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dorji, Tashi, Diki would all make good dog names I think.

Get a crate.

Blanket over it and a bed.

He sleeps in there for a while and will become his safe / quiet place.... Not to be used for time outs (the pen for that).

Only allow them access to the house slowly, starting with the room the crate is is, preferably where the family are most (lounge?) Most dogs won't toilet where they sleep so it helps with toilet training..... Ie, soon as you let them out, you take outside. Idea is they also associate the lounge as their area and so won't toilet in it.

Any toys you buy, or chews, research them.... Many are not good for dogs, despite been sold by Pets at Home....

Our 10 month old is toilet trained, has been for some time and knows to ring the bell at the back door when he wants out for toilet (or bored and wants a sniff, which generally leads to doing the toilet)

well day 3 of Hugo life - 1st day was ok - we tried to crate him overnight in the bedroom but he went mental , so put him downstairs and he was fine.
following days have been a blur of chasing him outside for poo/pee (he seems to pee at any point without obvious signs of peeing)
the overnight though has starting to get quite bad. whining and yelping for almost the entire night - we are going with not going down to see him as it promotes him getting what he wants ....

BUT ANY ADVICE on the overnight issue, much welcome (we have also keep on a light and music for him too )

apart from that its all fun fun fun - he's really chilled, not affected by noise, loves his bed in his crate, eats like a horse, and enjoys the enclosed garden - despite -4 degrees frozen patio/grass!!!

Congratulations on your new pup Hugo, he is very cute!!

My advice (I'm a trainer) is to go down and comfort him and bring his crate up to you. It is actually not at all true that it promotes getting what he wants. He is a tiny puppy who has just left his litter and he needs comfort. You want to promote confidence in being alone and not a fear of being alone - 'crying it out' or 'self soothing' is now understood to be neurologically damaging.

If he wakes up, just quietly take him out to see if he wants the toilet and then put him back in crate with no fuss. This usually resolves very quickly. As he becomes more settled you can move the crate out of the room and gradually downstairs.
You also want to build positive associations with his crate not negative ones - if he is left to cry he will associate stress/anxiety and all the wrong things with the crate. smile

There is a LOT of old wives tales and bad advice out there (still). I'd suggest getting signed up with a qualified trainer for some puppy skills classes (I know a few who are doing some great zoom classes online) means you will also have someone you can build a relationship with and ask all these questions along the way. Be wary of internet/FB advice - it is often wrong (and potentially very damaging). You want to build a really happy confident dog so the home should be a place he feels really happy and relaxed in - not stressed.

Here are a couple of links to some good resources/articles about puppies night time crying.

Great advice above - thank you all so much - he's starting to settle a lot better now - getting used to the routine and we calm him down in the night time too - i'm back at work (WFH) but my partner starts tomorrow , so he'll be with me all day but i'll be busy - we'll see how much attention he really wants then!!!!

as per his breed, he's quite demanding and attention seeking - a little yap at me every now and again when he doesnt get to play or do what he wants -its all good though - we really love the wee fella.

he's also fearless for his size - up on top of the patio area despite 3 huge steps and running around the garden chasing leaves , and now robins!

Its been a few weeks now - and he's a right confident chappie.

night time wise he goes from 11pm to 7am no issues, he has a large pen for him at night with all toys and water and pee mat, and rushes to the loo outside each morning - the elation he has to see us each morning is wonderous....

he has started teething and chewing everything so we keep well engaged with him and his chew toys

because of the breeder being an idiot and not being able to say if he was vaccinated , he has been delayed in getting outside for walks - but today is that day...............will take a little walk at a time.
his general pattern is ....." i dont like it and dont want it and will yap at you for 5 mins.....ok its tollerable.....i love it and yap at you for me to do it again and again...."

he still has some pee issues inside, but we're getting there....

he's also grown massivley and looks even bigger when his fur expands in the cold!

He’s a wee beauty !!! I thought the outside walkies would never happen , great fun when it does though . How weird the breeder not knowing if he was vaccinated??? Any way he is now and that’ll give you all the peace of mind you’ll need . Enjoy him !

well - we thought initially walking was easy - he was keen but i think it was more he didnt want to be left behind and was nervous - because the past few days he just sits on the dorrstep and doesnt move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

any tips? we've tried treats in our hand but its painfully slow and even he doesnt come after he's had a enough treats.

tried waiting, but he just waits too

tried some tugs on the lead, but he just remains still

will do some googling and reading but any advice would be good!

other than that he still doesnt go outside to pee 90% of the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey there,
This is a pretty common issue trainers get asked, there’s several tactics you can try. My favourite though is to turn it into a door game, that becomes a gate game, that becomes end of the road game. Etc. So forget formal walks for now, focus on clipping the lead on, put your coat on and be EXCITING, say ‘let’s go’ or ‘this way’ and turn it into a bit of fun to get out the threshold. Praise him, roll a treat down and come back in. Repeat several times a day and go a step or two further and add a couple more paces at a time. Couple of weeks your dog will think going out is amazing and he’ll think the same about you. I actually tie this game in with teaching loose lead walking but it works for the going outside walks too.

Never pull, you’ll transfer frustration down the lead and he’ll pick up on it. Good luck!

PS are you using indoor puppy pads?
