The Parsnip household is due to take delivery of a lab for Christmas because that's exactly what the saying says you should do, right?

Having witnessed the madness of a Canicross race, it is something I really want to get into eventually.

Does anyone take part and are there any good resources/books/websites available on how to get the dog into it? Would plan to join a local club, but bedtime reading ahead of time would be good.

I know I'm overly keen (who isn't when they get a new pup) and am well aware that the dog will need time to develop and not overdoing it when the dog is young is crucial, but with regards to getting the dog used to the harness, running etc. it would be good to have an eye on it early and make it a fun part of training, rather than getting to 12 months, entering a race and saying "right, 38 min 10k please dog"

Obligatory picture of Lola, mum and siblings (she's the pink one) - named after the B09/60 and not the showgirl:

Without knowing anything about canicross, but having a 2yo lab, I'd focus more on your fitness than worrying about the dog! smile

We don't run, but have taken Maple out on bikes from around 12 months. Initially stopping for a rest (for her) every mile (15 minutes). She wouldn't rest and just mucked about with other dogs / in the water!!

Now at 2 years, I try and keep to 6-7mph for 1 hour, but still feel I'm not going fast enough for her.

Here after 7 miles...

On a serious note, maybe have eyes on getting her to walk / run nicely alongside you without pulling or tripping you up could be useful.

Will do, cheers!

I definitely want to be able to run with the dog at heel/alongside, but canicross just seems a bit different in that something in the dogs head must switch and they go from "I'm happy to run at your leisurely human pace" to "WE ARE NOW AT DOG SPEED, DO NOT SLOW ME DOWN" so I would assume there is at least some specific training/guidance to follow so that the dog knows when its go time and when its well behaved walkies time.

If nothing else it looks a massive laugh for human and dog.
